What Is This Item In This Interior Image...

What is this item in this interior image from my 2003 Suburban; it's above the driver, in the headliner. It makes a buzzing-type noise or vibration when you first start the vehicle up and continues for a few minutes. It's really annoying and continues for a few seconds even after I turn the ignition off. If I push on it or the headliner, it doesn't seem to make the noise go away.

Thank you!

Richard

That vent has a little fan in there, it is used for the climate control in the vehicle. A friend of mine had the same issue in his Yukon, replaced the piece, noise went away

#PIT3511C: Buzz Or Hum Noise From Headliner Above Driver - (Nov 24, 2008)

Subject: Buzz or Hum Noise From Headliner Above Driver

Models: 2002-2009 Cadillac Escalade, EXT, ESV

2000-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe

2003-2009 Chevrolet Silverado, Silverado Classic

2003-2009 GMC Sierra, Sierra Classic

2000-2009 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali, Yukon Denali XL

With RPO CJ2 or C68

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Customers may comment that they have a buzz/vibration/hum noise emanating from the headliner in an area that looks like a microphone or a small speaker.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The plastic escutcheon grill, which is round and located just above the driver and towards to the left side, is the interior ambient temperature sensor. The sensor is used in conjunction with the automatic HVAC (CJ2 or C68). On occasions, this sensor has been known to make a buzz/vibration/hum sound. The sensor uses a small fan to pull air over the sensor. This noise may be intermittent.

Although it may not be possible to alleviate all of the noise, Engineering has found that if the sensor is installed incorrectly that it may bind and cause the fan to make noise. Remove the sensor and while doing so check for any binding. Reinstall the sensor and re-test. If the noise is still present, the sensor itself may be noisy and require replacement.

Never would have guessed that; thought maybe it had to do with somesort of microphone. There is a second one on the drivers' side, just above and behind the second-row seating. Is this some sort of temperature reading sensor for the climate control? I've never felt any air coming out of it, so I guess it would be an intake?

How can I remove it and take a better look; can it be pulled down from the headliner, or does the headliner have to come down to access this item?

Thanks,

Richard

WOW! Great reply; looks like I know where to start... can it be pulled down from the headliner, or does the headliner need to come down first?

Thanks,

Richard

Do NOT believe any of the posts in this thread. The little fan is just a "cover-up". It is indeed a micro-phone that is directly linked to the government as well as the video camera embedded into the rear view mirror.

Wrap them both in tin foil and you will be fine.

Looking at this picture of the A-pillar, what's the best way to pulldown the plastic piece without distorting the plastic, pulling from the top, or from the sides?

If you pull it up while twisting it in towards the center of the truck it should pop out,I've had many of those A-pillar moldings in and out, they can be fun! :D
