Concerns About Fuel Saver Mode...

I'm researching into buying a Silverado... But the 4 cylinder fuel saver mode concerns me.

First of all, doesn't it bring the possibility of problems? More electronics = more potential for issues

Secondly, how seamless is the transition from 4cyl to 8cyl mode? One of the things I loved about my Silverado was the INSTANT power delivery. No lag anywhere (My current jeep has a lag between pressing on the pedal and the RPMs building).

Thirdly, is there a way to shut it off??

Finally, when deciding on a motor, should I go with the 5.3 or 6.0???

To be honest, this truck wont see much towing (occasional boat, 3,500lbs), or hauling (only snowboards/bicycles). I'm tempted to get a tacoma since it'll meet my needs, but the remote start, decent extended cab leg room, good bed etc. have me tempted to go with the silverado. The only reason for the 6.0 is the extra power (for getting up to speed, and having the power if I need it!)

1 Yes

2 it's very seamless IMO, you can't tell unless you have it displayed on the "DIC", and are watching and listening closely

+1

All of our newer trucks have some lag programmed into them to save the transmissions. It is most noticeable when stomping on it while at cruising speed.

The above have it.

You can turn off the "fuel saver mode" by getting a custom computer tune.

Its seamless unless you are looking for the change. I just went from a 2003 Silverado with a 5.3 to a 2007 Silverado 5.3 (NNBS) with the active fuel management. I really can't tell when I'm concentrating on driving, but it is more noticeable with an aftermarket exhaust system. With a stock exhaust system, you can't hear it at all.

Any new truck you buy will have some lag built into it, no matter the make. It's called torque management and as somebody said above, they put it in there to "help" save the tranny. The good news is you can get a custom tune by either Black Bear Performance or Wheatley or whoever you choose and they will be able to eliminate that lag and give you more power, better fuel economy, better shift points, with little to no effect on the drivetrain.

Crap. I'll have to test drive a silverado and see how I feel about it. I know the jeep has the functionality for emissions (not transmission saving???), but I figured chevrolet would have a better program setup (you push on the gas and the truck moves.... as opposed to you floor the gas on the jeep, and it gives you no power, but VERY slowly builds up steam).

I'm not interested in flashing the computer. My next truck will be bone stock. I'm sick of messing around with what I have, only to not be happy. The only item I may add is an exhaust, but even then I may stick to stock (The tacoma I'm looking to buy, alternatively, would see the supercharger, although that is part of the reason I'm considering the silverado... as I know the supercharger adds a whole bunch of added costs!).

I guess for 2010 the chevrolets wont have the 6.0 option anyways, so I may be stuck with 5.3. It was no slouch in my '99 silvy, but our 6.0 box trucks at work MOVE in comparison. And extra performance isn't always a bad thing out of the box... Then again, it does up my price, putting me out of my range.

The 6.2 w/ 6L80 6-spd replaces the 6.0 in the 2010 models. I seriously doubt that "retuning" the 5.3 will disappoint you. It's a clear-cut way to remove lag (torque management) etc... although, it does jeopardize the warranty. The 5.3 puts out plenty of power, but it feeds in slower than some prefer to protect hard parts. Personally, I think the 5.3 is responsive stock... but won't do much "tire burning". A good tune puts that power to the road "now".

Yeah, jeopardizing the warranty is exactly what I don't want to do.

If I have a chance, I'll need to test drive the truck sooner rather than later. I'm curious to see how throttle response has changed.... I loved my '99.... I hope it's not a drastic change...

going from my 00 Silverado 5.3 to my 08 tahoe 5.3 with AFM the Tahoe has much more get up and go and is more responsive.
