Uh-oh

Started hearing a clunking noise in the front end when making turns both left and right. I can kinda feel a slight pulsing in the steering wheel. Not really when making slight turns like changing lanes, but more for 90 degree turns. I checked under the front end, and nothing looks out of the ordinary, as far as I can tell. No fluid leaks, p/s fluid was not low.

Any ideas?

How many miles on the truck and is it the 2006 in your signature. I ask because my work truck has this steering shaft issue, my personal truck does not. I asked the dealer if it was something that was going to eventually happen to my personal truck and he said that it usually happens within the first 10,000 miles. I told him I had 40,000 on it and he said "if it hasn't happened by now it won't, you got a good one." No idea if that's true, but that's what the service dept. at McDermott Chevrolet in CT said.

Here's a step-by-step tutorial on how to replace the ISS yourself with the improved part offered by GM. It's really easy and an inexpensive fix.

Yup its the W/T in my sig....21800 miles on it. Seems like the ISS is a common problem with the Silverados for quite some time.

Daddy...looks pretty straightforward. Is it much of a PITA to get up under the dash? Being the *ahem* large dude that I am, I really try to avoid situations that require me to be a contortionist. For some reason the new shaft looks shorter in the picture than the OEM shaft.

Its pretty easy to do. Just push the seat all the way back and tilt the column up. There is plenty of room to access the ISS.

Here's a step-by-step tutorial on how to replace the ISS yourself with the improved part offered by GM. It's really easy and an inexpensive fix.

Daddy...looks pretty straightforward. Is it much of a PITA to get up under the dash? Being the *ahem* large dude that I am, I really try to avoid situations that require me to be a contortionist. For some reason the new shaft looks shorter in the picture than the OEM shaft.

It requires a little bit of effort but it's not too bad to get under there. I'm 6'4" and 225lbs so I'm not the smallest of guys either. You'll be fine.

The shaft extends, that's why it looks shorter.
