Oem Backup Camera Quality?

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about getting the oem backup camera for my truck. I was wondering how well the camera works at night time. I have seen some cars where the camera works great and others that are blurry. For the people that have it, how do you like it? Where is the camera mounted? And how much did you get it for?

Mine is mounted above the license plate but I have a Yukon Denali. The quality at night is surprisingly good IMO. I get decent light from the back and I can see about 70% as good as in the day. Of course the farther away from the camera the darker it is but 3-5 feet is pretty clear to me.

I pick my new Sierra up on Friday and it's got the factory backup camera on it, so I'll post up some initial impressions then if nobody else has chimed in. I can tell you that the camera is mounted in the trim around the tailgate handle, and mine will be displayed on a screen embedded in the rear-view mirror (versus on the in-dash nav radio which I didn't get).

I am interested in this also. I was looking over at Chevy Parts website and I cannot find it. I was wondering if perhaps you had a part # that I could use to look it up. I would like it mainly for my better half as she has a great deal of trouble backing the truck up especially at night.

I was pleasantly surprised with the factory camera clarity and field of view. The light provided by taillights and backup lights is more than adequate to give a good picture at night, at least as far back as you need to be concerned with. The field of view is amazing...I found I can pull in the garage, pop it into reverse for a moment and see clearly if I am safely within (past) the garage door before shutting down. You can also see the trailer hitch ball. I'm sure that will come in handy next spring when we head to the lake.

+1. The wife's Tahoe has it and it's really good IMO.

I don't believe there's an OEM one for your truck, just the 07+ GMT900 trucks. But there are aftermarket ones out there that are similar in design (like this one, which is one I'm considering getting for my wife's SUV).

Well I picked up my truck tonight, and here are my basic initial impressions of the factory backup camera. It is very helpful, and is actually a lot brighter and easier to see in the dark than I expected. In fact, other than when I first drove the truck when I showed up at the dealer this evening, all the rest of my backing has been in the dark and it sees very well in the dark. I haven't exactly figured out the field of view in terms of the width (ie, "is that mailbox I can see on the very edge of the picture going to be clear or is it gonna tag the corner of my bumper?"), but I'm sure that's just a matter of using it some more and getting used to the perspective. Even though I haven't used it a bunch I definitely like it, and I'm glad I added it to the truck when I ordered it. I also tried lfortner's suggestion, and it does work well for verifying that I've pulled far enough into the garage to clear the door too.

I think the OEM Backup Camera is Great. I also like how it is in the Rearview Mirror now instead of my 07 which I had added into the Nav Screen....basically my reasoning for that is, you are looking up at what's going on, and not down at the radio when backing up.

As far as the quality, GREAT! Just make sure to keep your truck clean, cause once that lense gets dirt or water from the rain on it....it gets the image distorted a little bit.

Gm sells it as an acessory. It runs about $899 and that includes the benzel for the tailgate handle and a new rear view mirror. It is all plug and play. You will have to drill a hole in the bottom of the tailgate. We have done about 5 of them for our customers.

so where can i find all the parts online? And when you say plug and play what all does that imply? do i have to get power from the fuse panel, run wire through the head liner, run a wire from the tailgate all the way into the cab?

What if i have the autodimming review? Does the new mirror come with that sensor?

Here's a link to what appears to be the OEM setup that I posted elsewhere, it's got the installation instructions at the bottom of the page. And yes, if it works like mine does that came on my truck, you'll still have the autodim mirror.
