Help Me Choose My Stereo

Recommended Posts

Posted

This is my first post on this web site.  I just bought an '02 Sliverado Ext Cab, LT.  I'm looking to upgrade the stereo and all 4 speakers.  I don't have a lot of money (not after paying for the truck!), so need some advice from the experts here.

What would you suggest for a Head Unit and Speaker combo that will be sharp, clear, and powerful enough.  I'm not looking to blast the cars next to me, just provide very good sound for the cab.  I would consider adding an amp if required.

I don't know a lot about car audio systems, don't even know what a "crossover" is, but I'm trying to learn.  I could spend around $600-$700 total.  Hope that's enough.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome my friend!!

I can only recommend what i have.

Pioneer 8400

Its a beautiful unit (maybe too flashy), plays regular CD's, MP3's, WMA's, CD-R's/RW's, and is XM ready.

It powers my Infinity Kappa 6.5" components and rear speakers fine without an amp and i purchased everything on EBAY.

The radio lists for about $600 with tax, but i got it on ebay for $390.00.

The components list for around $350.00 and i got them for $150.00

The rears i got for $75.00

I found an XM receiver and antanae for $100.00

Good luck!!!

Thanks, I've been following some of your other posts on your sound system.  I love the look of your truck, by the way.  I visited you web page and checked it out.

What paint did you use on your door handles and how did you prep the plastic before painting?  I like that look and might do the same on my truck.  Thanks again.

If you don't have a lot of cash to dump into a system I suggest leaving the factory unit in and add an amp, w/sub woofer...use a crossover for the woofer,,i did this with the factory deck in my 97 Z71 and wow,,you would be amazed. This way you can spend you $600 on top notch speakers and a good amp and change your deck later...Gun

Thanks man!

Did you sign my guestbook, your name looks familiar?

The handles looked too easy, so i did em with spray paint.

I forgot the brand, but it was a high gloss white.  I sanded them down a bit and applied "Bond-Aid" (a spray), then the white.

Came out great!

You will get a huge improvement in upper and lower response by replacing the head unit.  Having said that...I do not plan to replace my head unit for a while.  I like the factory funtionality and look.  I am in the process of replacing my rear speakers (4x6 Infinity Kappa Plates) and installing a pair of 10" Soundstream subs in a MTX box.  I will be powering these with a 200 watt 2 channel Sony amp bridged mono.  I will be running a 4 channel Sony amp to power the Kappas in the rear and factory fronts.

Amps and speakers are from previous systems.
