Ac Delco Oil Filter # Change

Recommended Posts

It is time for me to change the oil in my '05 Silverado CCSB 4X4 5.3 Z71 with 27,000 miles. I have had it since 16,000 miles and have used Mobil 1 5W-30 with AC Delco oil and air filters.

I have always used the AC Delco PF46 oil filter when changing the oil. Today I was picking up a new filter and checked the cross reference book at the parts store just to make sure.....it said PF61. Now, I did a double take and looked at a PF61 and it was about 25% longer than the PF46.

What gives? The extra capacity would be nice, but are there any ill effects of using the PF61? AC Delco's website still says PF46.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

You must be reading the book wrong or its not reliable.

According to AC Delco applications list the PF61 is not the correct filter for your truck, the PF46 is. The PF 61 is for a 350 diesel engine.

I don't believe the 61 has an anti-drain valve. GM called for a filter with an anti-drain valve for your engine. Some people think because the filter mounts verticle, you don;t need an anti drain valve...

This is an old post from C&Asdad. He was a parts man...

I am no engineer when it comes to this but I will tell you what I have been told by the engineer at Wix that I know. The AD valve is important on certain engines no matter how the filter is mounted. On our engines and others with the filter mounted upright, it allows oil to remain in some of the passages where it would otherwise drain back.

Again, I asked this same question and was told that if it is desiged in from the OE, it is vital that it be there.

....Great! I did the EXACT samething as the OP because I shop at WalMart for my filters and oil. I've used a 61 for the past two oil changes and haven't given it a second thought. Looks like I'm going back to PF46's !

Is it possible that I've suffered any ill effects?

That information is great. I looked the PF61 on the AC Delco website and I read that it was for the older model 350's.

I guess it all reverts back to the fact that if it isn't broke don't fix it. I am sticking with the PF46.

Thanks again-

You are OK, it could cause a tick at start up till the oil passages fill up.

I Sell NAPA WIX I can tell you about the wix and give you some AC Delco numbers.

PF46 is a FIL 1042 - 3.404 long

PF58, PF59, PF61 all cross over to the FIL 1522 - 4.526 long

With that SAID, PF61's on a GM Full Size Truck would have been the 350 diesel. However, 1522 would work on your truck as long as it does not have a clearance issue. The PF58 and PF59 have been come obsolete I think with AC Delco and have swapped to PF46's.

I have a 99 GMC 5.3L use to call for a PF59, I screwed a MANY on my truck until WIX fixed the cold start problem with the 1522's. However, if you look my truck up now AC DELCO says use a PF46.

Both the 1042 and the 1522 have the anti-drain back valves. I am not sure on the AC Delco filters about the anti-drain back valve on the PF61 but the PF58 and PF59 both had the anti-drain back valve.

EITHER WAY your ONLY going to have 6 quarts as full.

Warning - There is more to a oil filter that the size and fit.

Other conditions that determine a filters usage to name a few of the most important;

By-pass valve setting - PSI

Burst Pressure - PSI

Max Flow Rate - GPM

Nominal Micron Rating

You might find a filter that fits but it may not meet the specifications of you vehicles filter design. Every filter cross reference will warn you about using cross reference data as the sole authority on vehicle application. You should also cehck the filter manf. vehicle guide for the correct filter to use. All to often many just compare dimensions and never pay any attention to other spec's.

Circa 2007

AC Delco introduces the next generation of Duraguard® oil filters. This advanced filter technology allows the filter to function better while being lighter and more easily recycled. The oil filter redesign will be a rolling change with no price impact. An improved nylon core provides more open area in the core, yielding more filtering area for improved flow in a smaller canister, while maintaining the same capacity as the larger canister. Increased efficiency, higher collapse strength, and higher burst strength are the result of a roll seam design. The redesigned concave base plate allows for the accommodation of the combination relief and anti-drain back valve, while incorporating a raised threaded flange. Four new filter sizes cover the redesigned part numbers.
