4wd System Troubleshooting

I'm new to the site, just picked-up a 92 S-15 w/4.3 to consider for purchase. Can't get it into 4WD, lever shifts into 4H and 4L but the front axle light on the shifter does not come on and of course no 4wd. where should I start?

id start by checking the fuse for the 4 wheel . my 94 had a blown fuse when i got it so of course 4 wheel wouldn't work

The front differential is engaged via a vacuum actuator. It's in front of the engine on the passenger's side way on the bottom. Make sure the vacuum line is still good and that the rubber diaphragm isn't torn.
