Michelin LTX AT Tires

I got these to replace the truly awful Firestone Wilderness AT's my truck came with.  I was actually going to buy the LTX MS, the same tire with a less agressive tread, but I couldn't find four anywhere at one place.  I was talking to a guy who was at the store (Sam's Club) who had the AT's and he really liked them, and they had four, so I went with them.

They are GREAT tires!  Good on all surfaces, in any weather!  I have about 16K on them now, they look like they should go about 75K at least.  The truck goes very straight, doesn't wiggle on tar strips like some tires do, and rides very nicely, as long as you keep the pressure at the stock amount, and don't pump them up to the max pressure on the sidewalls.  That's what they did at Sam's and it rode really bad on the way home!  They do whine though, and gas milage dropped about 1 MPG compared to the Fstones.  I'll gladly take the hit.

Pluses:

Great traction.

Good Ride (not as soft as the Fstones, but doesn't "jiggle" like they did.

Very good tread life, looks like 75K for sure.

Truck tracks much better than the Fstones.

Minuses:

Cost! $124 each after the rebate I never got!

Noisy whine at all speeds, it doesn't bother me.

Not as good on milage as the Fstones.

A friend has Goodyear's on his 2001 Silverado, he's getting the Michelins when he needs tires.  My truck is vastly superior to his in the rain, or snow.

I would rate them a solid 9 out of 10, if it wasn't for the noise, I would give them a 10!

I had these on a lifted 4x4 Jeep Cherokee.  LOVED EM.  Sold the jeep with 70k miles on the tires with no complaint from the purchaser about worn tires.

They really cut through water and snow well.

Another thumbs up for the LTX AT's.  I first got a set of these several years ago on my old '92 Chev. Sport 4x4, after eating up three sets of Goodyears (every 30,000 miles).  I personally installed them myself, and while balancing them I noticed how straight and true they spun, and they required on average about half the weight to balance them as the Gy's.  As far as performance, they did everything better (ride, handling, traction, wear, less road noise).  Wet weather traction is awesome (I can't believe how much I had skated around before with the Gy's in the rain - damn near piled 'er up a couple times while driving through some puddles and also trying to do anything beyond a slow, gradual stop).  I sold the truck last year with 165,000 miles on it, and the truck had about 1/2 the tread still left!

When I bought my new truck, I wanted to install some larger  tires on it (245's to 265's) and also get a slightly more aggressive tread pattern.  This, to me, was a no brainer.  I immediately had the Firestone Steeltex tires removed and replaced with LTX AT's.

As far as increased road noise, I can't find any discernable difference.  Just be sure to rotate them (front/rear) about every 10,000 miles or so.

IMHO, they're well worth the extra money you pay for them.

I have had the Firestone Steeltex's on previous trucks and also my current truck, all 245/75/16's. They have been good tires and IMO are better than most, but I doo like the LTX AT's!

I have owned Michelins for years and could hardly wait for the opportunity to replace the stock Goodyears with the LTXs.

On the back gravel roads in Washington, I had a flat and before I could get stopped, the tire was toast.  That was at about 32k miles.  I put on a set of LTXs and never looked back.  83k miles later, I am thinking of getting a new set.  We use the truck to go skiiing and the tires provide traction under all kinds of icy conditions.  Great tires and would not want anything else!
