Hu? Yawl is a sailboat term, dont understand what your trying to say about sailboats, ice and tires to do with a sailboat?I wouldn't recommend sailing when there's snow and ice out. :dunno:

This article is about the sailing craft. For the workflow system, see YAWL. 250px-Sailing_Vessel_Odyssey.jpg magnify-clip.png Yawl sailing vessel. A yawl (from Dutch Jol) is a two-masted sailing craft similar to a sloop or cutter but with an additional mizzen mast well aft of the main mast, often right on the transom. A small mizzen sail is hoisted on the mizzen mast.

The yawl was originally developed as a rig for commercial fishing boats, one good example of this being the Salcombe Yawl (a traditional small fishing boat built in Devon). In its heyday, the rig was particularly popular with single-handed sailors, such as circumnavigators Harry Pidgeon and Francis Chichester. This was due to the ability of a yawl to be trimmed to sail without rudder input. Modern self-steering and navigation aids have made this less important, and the yawl has generally fallen out of favor.

In the 1950s and 60s yawls were developed for ocean racing to take advantage of the handicapping rule that did not penalize them for flying a mizzen staysail, which on long ocean races, often down wind, were a great advantage,

Always wanted to try snow tires, but in north eastern IN we dont see enough consistent snow to justify them. Maybe if they quit salting the darn roads! I hate salt! Rusts out cars! Hate rust! LOL. Driving on snow packed ice might be more costly though than rust damage

The picture shown was taken about 4 years ago of my '94 in one of our many snow storms. This truck was a lame duck in the snow until I put in a limited slip differential, and put on a set of Blizzaks. With this combination, the truck was unstoppable.

For serious snow also, you can't beat tire chains. I just bought a pair from www.vulcantire.com I bought regular chains, but I have really had good luck with those cable-chains as well. Also, they don't suck as much if you hit a patch of pavement. However, for me to go anywhere in my 2wd I have to put a lot of weight in the back. 14 bags of pea-gravel in the back right now. That stuff is awesome for getting out if you get stuck also, works better in snow than sand in my opinion. If you want chains, I found the vulcan tire website to be cheap and man, they came fast.

My factory 20" Goodyears were at about 50% so I got a set of 17" W/T steelies and mounted one of the most inexpensive snow/ice tires I could find for the winter. A set of Firestone Winterforces ~ $85 each. Noticeably better in 2wd, but flip the 4x4 on and its a tank. Worth every penny.

If you get a lot of snow....Snow tires are pretty much a must. I have gone places better with snowies on a 2wd than people running All season or A/T 's on a 4wd.

As for ice tires...those are invaluable. They make so much of a difference when trying to stop and corner on ice...and much better than chains or studs IMO....studs feel like your driving on ice when you are on dry pavement and have to lock up the wheels for some retard. Chains are just a pain in the ass. Chains are good to carry...just in case.
