Recall On Lower Control Arms/ball Joint

I work part-time at a friends independent auto parts store. Today we got a call from our supplier to inform us that GM was pulling (not officially recalling) all lower ball joint/control arm assemblies for the GMT-900, 2007 NBS and newer pick-up trucks. This is supposedly due to an engineering problem. We have one on the shelf and were instructed not to sale it over-the-counter and only to a shop with instructions that is was being "pulled" by GM. Our main warehouse had 62 as of today, and were pulling them to send back to GM. Phone calls to four (4) GM dealers within 100 miles confirmed this. They are pulling their stock to be sent back to GM. One dealer informed us they had been notified that GMPDS (Parts Distribution Services) had been notified to pull all of their stock to return to GM. A newly-revised ball joint/control arm is somewhere in the pipeline and no delivery date is available as of today. "Supposedly' Dorman has been gearing up to produce this part as an after-market part. Boy, what timing IF they have theirs ready. Three shops I talked to today state that they have not seen much work for these, but with the '07 NBS's reaching the 100,000 mile area it's probably about time. If anyone has anymore info on this, chime in. David

Do you have a bulletin number? I'm a parts manager at a GM dealer, and as of today I have not received any notice that they are "pulling" them.

And your friends store...He stocks GM lower control arms for the GMT900 trucks? Its not often an "independent auto parts store" stocks a GM part.

The problem has been the uppers, what the hell would they be pulling the lowers for?

Except there have been problems on stock trucks too. So back to the right way.

Actually, the majority of the load of the suspension is transferred through the LCA, not the UCA. The UCA balljoint issues sound like someone tried to save money...

it is strange ms3dale does not know anything about it. you would think gm dealers would know about this first.

I check the messages from GM every morning, and through-out the day,I haven't seen anything yet.

When, and if I do,I'll let you guys know.

+1 Most of the load is through the lower ball joint.

Not very long ago we were going through lower ball joints for 4wd S10's like crazy,But the uppers were always fine....We had to put lower ball joints on the '94 ZR2 I had with only 11,000 miles on it.

Listening to my favorite auto radio call in show last Saturday, apparently GM is not the only ones having issues with the ball joints wearing out way too early, seems to be a major issue on all the newer trucks now, Ford, Dodge, Toyota, and Nissan included. Go figure.

Wonder if the other trucks have greasable ball joints or not

It might not make a difference, since the ones on the S10's were greasable and still wore out prematurely,I was just wondering.

I knew I would have to get more info on this, so I made more phone calls this A.M. As best I can find out, there is not a TSB on this (I do find this odd). I called a Chevy dealer and a GMC dealer who confirmed that they received printed info to pull the parts and place them for the GMPD truck to pick up on it's rounds. Those of you familiar with this understand procedure. We do the same at the store, receive parts overnight, and return them via the "milk truck" as we call it. YES, we do carry some genuine GM parts, along with some Ford, and some foreign makes. We did used to carry some Chrysler parts, but since their bankruptcy this has seemed to stop, no matter. As far as ball joints on other brands, I can assure you that more Ford ball joints and ball joint/lower control arm assemblies go over the counter for less than ten year old Ford's than any others. MS3DALE---I wonder if this is a regional thing, this would be the S.E. region. Kinda odd that it would be. "Zimbonez"--I'm just relaying what I know as of now, no smelly stuff, not trying to/no reason to scare anyone. David
