Auto Ac Is Retarded!

Ughh. I just don't understand this dam thing!. In the morning set to Manual I have it tuned to 76 degrees. It's pumping 100 degree air at maximum and I"m dying. HOwever on the way home at night. The air set at 80 is barely warm!.

It's very inconsistent. One day 76 feels like 90 and another day 80 feels like 72.

Another issue is. during the winter most people typically turn off the AC part of the system. YOu can leave it in auto but just make sure the snowflake button is not lit. The problem is. God forbid you get behind some car or truck who's burning more oil than they should and you click the Recirc button If your temp was set to 72 now the AC will come on. But the Snowflake button WILL NOT LIGHT UP. but you can feel the air going cold.

I removed the fuse under the hood that controls the DRL's. Would that affect the Sensor on my dash? The auto headlights still work fine and I read somewhere that the auto AC will use that to determine the SUN LOAD.

I can take my truck into the dealership but thought I'd ask others if they understand how the auto AC is suppose to function.

Thanks!

Dang, I LOVE it in mine. Set it and leave it alone.

I set the desired temp around 72-73 and push the auto button. It does the rest and I hardly every touch it. For me, it's worked flawless. If I have a chil, I'll bump it up a few degrees, if I'm hot, lower it a few.

You shouldn't be having all those issues unless you have a bad temp sensor. I had a Caddy Seville that had those issues. The temp was NEVER right till they replaced a sensor.

+1 Mine stays at 75 in the winter and if I get a little chill, I bump it up a few degrees. Overall, I am very happy with the way mine works. I'm guessing you have something wrong with yours.

I think what it does is when it starts the heater and your cab is cold, it blows really hot air to bump the temp up to the desired temp faster and when it gets close, it slows the air down and lowers the temp. I get annoyed with mine also because it does the same thing. It will blow super hot air and then blow cold air. I think that it over-shoots the desired temp and then blows cold air to compensate....At least thats what I convince myself that it is doing

Well I thought that might be the case too but the only inconsistency in that theory is at night on my way home. Still have the AC Set to 76 and instead of blowing 100 degree HOT air at max like it does in the morning. NOw it's blowing Cold air or I'd say outside air thats a bit chilly. I try like some of you.. bump the degrees up one or two. NO Change. Its not until I hit 80+ before it gets slightly warmer.

Where is the Temp sensor? I just hate taking the truck to the dealership. They always want to keep it and put you in a lousy Rental.

I feel the same about mine. I haven't really had to run the AC much since I've had it, but on heat it seems to overshoot the temperature and try to compensate by then blowing cool air which is annoying when you want it warm. I miss just being able to set the dial to a certain hot/cold setting and know that the air coming out will consistently be about the same temperature. I also miss having a dial I can just reach over and adjust the temperature or fan speed by feel, on these auto systems I gotta look and make sure I'm pushing the correct little button.

Anyone know if it's a direct swap to install the base HVAC unit in a truck that's currently got the auto unit? I'd hope it's just plug and play but with these trucks it may take some programming too. If it's not too much trouble I may decide to go that route eventually if I still am not too enthralled with the auto unit. They're only about $75 on eBay last I looked.

I have a manual A/C and love it. I am not too lazy to reach for the levers and adjust the temperature once in a while. I would not want auto A/C even if they gave me $ 400 credit for it.

+1 more. Mine works great!

I have noticed that most of the people that have been complaining about the Auto AC recently have a 09 or 10 model. I wonder if something has changed?

Mine works great too, hardly ever touch it. It uses outside and inside temp sensors to decide what to do. Maybe one of your sensors is out of wack. Might have the dealer check it.

Nope. I have a 2007 and the Auto A/C sucks!

I haven't run it in a year now, but in the summer, I'll get in, start it, and it'll blow piss-hot hurricane force air on my face. The winter is worse, kinda like a blizzard for 10 minutes. I feel like I need a ski-mask.

I liked the old system on my 99. If I wanted it warmer (and the engine had heat), I'd crank the temp. dial towards the right, and increase the fan speed. If I'm hot in the summer, put the dial on COLD until I'm cooled down, Then decrease the fan speed. I'm always monkeying with mine, trying to decide whether I'd rather be 72° or 73°.

You do not have to use the auto mode. Then you have the manual just like days of old...I usually go with with auto unless I do not like the fan speed or mode and then just change it...much like the old systems, just buttons instead of dials and slides...If you think 'Otto' is going to get it just right, you will be mad at it a lot!

Bingo. This is one of the nicest features of any vehicle I've ever had. Set it, forget it. No muss, no fuss.

It's really convenient, easy to operate. I just set the temp, that's it. Need more heat, bump it up a few degrees. Cooler, set it lower. Everything is automatic.

This system is great.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
