Gmt900 Rear End Clunk

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am having a clunk in the rear end when turning (mainly right) and when hitting bumps (like going into my driveway) at slow speeds. Its not the shift clunk (slip yoke). I can actually stand on the rear bumper and bounce up and down and hear it clunk, I can also shake the bed and hear it clunk. I am thinking its the leaf springs. Anyone else have this problem? I sprayed some grease on the tonight, I am going to try again tomorrow

Note: also checked th spare tire and thats not it.

Hey did you check the spare tire???

Just kidding.

On the leaf springs packs there are three. The top two are sandwiched together and the third acts as kind of a helper spring. On the third spring (bottom one) at the ends of the spring should be rubber pads that keep the springs from clunking together. Make sure they are there.

My 08' didn't have the rubber bands, dealer installed later.

I definitely recall a thread regarding this type issue. I believe the truck had been brought to the dealer numerous times (this is normal B.S.) before finding the problem.

I vaguely remember it having to do with the spring pack.

Bingo, found it..............http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=102241&hl=rear+suspension

Hope this helps.

Great info Ron. Thanks.

I cant listen to the video but this is what I think is my problem. I lubed it a little last night until the can ran out. Tonight I am going to lube the pi$$ out of it and hopefully it goes away.

Be careful adding all that lube to your rear-end, it tends to really loosen things up.

Just to be safe, you should sleep on your back the next couple nights. :dunno:

As for your truck, hope you got it sorted out.

This conclusively proves that GM still keeps building clunkers. :dunno:

its the axle free play, go out and grab your rear wheels and push them in and out, you will get the clunk noise. I am going through the same thing right now. I have to take mine into the dealer.

I removed the gas tank shield, the spare tire, my tonneau cover lol and then i drove with my door open and heard it in the rear end. Read a thread on hear about a guy with the same issue and holy shit there the problem is!!!!

I can tell you it IS NOT a problem with the leaf springs, i thought at first it might be but after putting on new leafs with my lift kit the noise was still there.

Does anyone know if there is a tsb or fix for the excessive axle free play??

If so email me at [email protected] thanks!

It seems that the fix may necessitate axle replacement if the axle shafts are not made to strict enough spec (i.e are too short), or the C clip grooves are oversized, or the C clips are too thin. Why am I not surprised? Maybe they are using Chinese made axles now.

well its still there. Before however I could shake the bed and hear it now I cannot. Only time I really hear it is pulling into my driveway (pretty good side curb) and making a right hand turn.
