Oil Change - Change Filter?

Recommended Posts

So my history with maintaining my vehicles has included changing the oil filter everytime I change the oil. My 2006 is ready for an oil change, but the oil filter life indicator still shows 58%.

I realize this is not a big deal, and I'll likely change it, but I thought I'd see what you folks are doing.

And do you use genuine GM (Delco) filter?

Thanks in advance.

ALWAYS change the filter when you change oil... no matter how often you do it.

ALWAYS.

EDIT: I use the OEM filters on mine.

Always change filter with oil (under normal oil changing durations). You must be talking about the oil life monitor, I do not know of an oil FILTER life indicator. How far have you driven on the oil that is in there? Everyone has there own numbers that they prefer, but I would say change oil and filter every 4000-5000 miles on conventional, 6000-7000 miles on synthetic. This is a general rule of thumb I use, by no means is it written in stone.

That's the OIL LIFE monitor, not the oil filter monitor. You should change the oil filter every time the oil is changed. And if the oil life monitor says 58% left, why are you changing oil??

Wow - thanks for the quick responses!

Well, I guess I mis-read the vehicle information display - it was sunny out... :) . I jumped 20 years from an '86 to a 06, so this "fancy" technology is all new to me. I thought it said "filter", but I guess thinking about it now, that might be a bit strange. I'll look again.

Not sure of the actual number, but I know the mileage on the oil is low (I do not drive it every day). But it has been my history to change oil 3 to 4 times a year - typically every season, since the winters here are harsh. And I've been able to drive some pretty high mileage engines, so it's pretty cheap maintenance.

Thanks Guys.
