i have read some of the other threads on this topic. i have some additional questions. recently replaced long block in suburban. mil came on after start. i have code p1345. following the trouble-shooting tree in the manual, i have isolated the following items as non-causal: distributor gear, shaft, bushings/bearings, rotor, cap and crank sensor reluctor wheel, . i have not checked the cam position sensor (cmp), crank position sensor (ckp), or wiring for shorts/faults.

 

when following the manual procedure for distributor installation (ensure flat portion of distributor housing faces the front of the engine) i noted the rotor tab does not point exactly at the #8 stamp in the distributor housing. it is off by about 1/8 - 3/16 in. i made the assumption that this distance was within 'a few degrees of the #8 stamp' that was stated in the manual. i also noted, when i put on the distributor cap, that the #1 tower was too close to the upper intake manifold and i had to turn the distributor a bit to get the spark plug wire on.

 

the engine starts and idles fine. with the transmission in park i can raise the rpm to 2000 rpm's with no noted miss-fire. while test-driving the car i note an intermittent miss-fire.

 

i have an actron obd ii scanner but it does not have the advanced capability to check cam sensor retard.

 

does anyone have a good technique for installing the distributor? what is the cut-off point to determine if the distributor has been installed incorrectly vs. cam retard out of adjustment?

 

any help would be appreciated.
