Hello Guys.

I have an 09 GMC with remote start-looking for something with a range better than the GM remote.

Need some opinions of what is best value for an aftermarket system.

I am looking to spend around $500.00

I have the viper 5301 which is a 2 way system, and I think it works great, I bought mine and had it installed at Best Buy, they have a lifetime warranty on their install work, which I really liked. I was out the door just under $300, but you would need a bypass, which would cost a little more

I think I will go with the Viper Remote.

I talked with the installers at Best Buy and they sound like they would be the folks to go with.

 

I appreciate the opinions.

I have had several viper units on previous cars and loved them. Viper also has lifetime warrenty, and just make sure you get it installed at a DEI dealer (bestbuy is one). If you have it installed at bestbuy, you will also get a lifetime warrenty on their install work. If there ever is a problem, jsut take it to them and they will fix it at no cost. I just got a Viper 5701 2-way for my silverado, and it gets installed this weekend.

I got got this AstroStart put on her Impala last week at a Local Shop.

It's a 2-way with 2000 ft range. I think for everything including install, I paid ~$450. I was thinking of the Vipers, but I didn't want to go to Best Buy! Those guys know nothing about computers so . . . :crackup:

 

Anywho, I really like this remote. They did have a 5000 ft one with an LCD screen, for more $$$. :P

 

FYI, the guy at the shop said since my truck had a factory remote, he could just do an "extender." Basically the wiring was already done, so he didn't have to dig in as deep. I don't remember the exact number, but it was about $150 - $200 less!

This is what I do for a living. Anything made by Directed Electronics Inc will be a good quality product. This includes Viper, Clifford, Python, Avital, Astostart, Autostart, Automate and Autocommand. I personally have a Viper 5101 in my wifes car and in my truck. However you can't go wrong with any of the viper line up.

I have a very low milage '04 I have been thinking about putting a remote start on. I have told to go with the Viper line up as well. Just what is involved in an install? I relize that you have to by-pass the security that came with the vehical. Is it all plug and play or is there wire splicing involved? I am guessing since its aftermarket it has nothing to do with the BCM as well?

Being tired of the lackluster performance of my factory remote I had a Clifford installed. This is a 1 mile remote/alarm and so far is just awesome. I really like the Lcd screen as you can look at it and know your truck started. You can even check the temperature inside the truck on the LCD screen before you go out. I thought about the GM extended range but read too many stories where the range just wasn't alot better. Auto Trim Design did my install and the fellow there did a great job. I've never tried to start it 1 mile away but did start it a little over 1/2 mile away one day duck hunting while I had visual sight of my truck. Total cost was right at 500.

They get training by DEI, if there is a issue, they can call DEI for tech tips.

All Best Buy installers are also MECP certified. Best Buy also has its own private tech support line called Secret Weapon. These guys are all former installers and are also MECP certified.

I bought my truck used with an Audiovox remote start (I actually didn't realize it had a remote start until the day I bought it). While I have no idea what the serial number is for it, It has ridiculous range. I've managed to start my truck from the backroom at my work when my truck was parked in the row of spaces farthest away from the building. Well over 100 yards.

      Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

      How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.

      Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?

      What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way too big headlights (similar to a previous non-Wrangler SUV) should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crossing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
