My 07 NBS crapped out @ 40k. they covered it under power-train since it's a 4x4. Pretty lousy though only 40K.

Oh yea, it was the left one also.

my right one on my NBS '07 went at 36,000, then both ball joints went at 40,000 miles.

I am living on borrowed time. 174,8XX... 1999 Sierra 2wd GMT800 never changed either one........ But my 2001 Silverado 2500 4wd 170k Left x2 and the right once.... But the 2500 does lots of towing.....

For the price you pay for these trucks you think they would hold up a little better. I guess I really can't complain though 78K and $$00.00 spent on repairs.

Replaced both of my front ones on my '06 at 74k miles, it happened after I got it stuck in the snow and spun at full throttle for awhile, so I think that contributed significantly.

Good at least its common and doesn't mean I bought a used truck that was beat to hell. Thanks for the replies.

At first I thought makes my auto 4wd wasn't disengaging, then I checked underneath and the front driveshaft spun freely so I knew it was a bearing.

With electric motors (industrial maintence experience) you have to turn the shaft a couple turns a month when it on the shelf to keep the bearing grease from settling and causing corrosion on the top of the bearing. I'm thinking that the longer your truck sits (less miles driven) the more likely the bearing will fail.

Who knows, interesting though.

You bring up a great point. I have had two 4 wheel drive trucks now, 100k on the last one and 57k on this one, I have made it a point to put the trucks in 4 wheel high or low once a week, or at least everyother week just to turn the fluid, and keep everything moving freely. I have not had a bearing issue on either truck, just a front axle seal on this one. I dont know if that makes a difference or not? I also dont drive it like I stole it, I dont take corners hard (which I think puts more stress on the bearing). I also spray my CV boots with white lithium grease every oil change, this keeps them from drying out and cracking, and doesnt allow road grime to work holes in the boots. At least i feel it helps!

Another note: our work truck is 2 wheel drive, we had the bearing go out at 130,000 miles and we drove it until almost 160,000 before replacing it. We just wanted to see what would happen if it really let go! Nothing happened, just a bunch of dry metal on metal bearing noise. :dunno:

2006Z71.....the wheel bearing will spin all the time regardless....and there really no need to engage 4wd because the diff is always spinning on our trucks....although making sure the electrical engagement stuff doesn't freeze up engaging 4wd once a month isnt bad practice at all.

I can't stand the noise of a failing bearing...like nails on a chalkboard lol.

A service bullitin was issued on 06 2 wheel and 4x4 trucks for problems with premature ware of the front hubs and directed mainly at the left front, dealers were to replace under drivetrain warranty with a $50 deductable. My 06 Sierra Crew cab was done following that protocal with 38000+miles.

Not a bad idea....... Yeah the cv's spin but the stuff inside doesn't....... never thought about that.... I know my 96 f150 4x4 I had to go into the front on a couple occasions. I did not look forward to that growl it made when it was ready to get new bearings.... I only put 350k on it.... HEHEHE mostly all highway miles.....
