Chrome Paint

Recommended Posts

I came across this on autotpia while reading about how to detail a Delorean. Apparently a company called Innate that makes a chrome paint. Specifically the discussion was about an BMW M3 painted with the stuff, and I have to say it looks EXACTLY like chrome.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had used it and if it might be an alternative to the cheap chrome on my 09 that seemed to start pitting immidiatley.

Here is the site:

If no one has tried it I might buy a quart and chrome the hell out of something just to see how it lays down but it would be awesome to save the money if someone has a review of it.

It looks pretty interesting, but it might be cheaper and better to just get your bumper re-chromed at a quality shop. The paint seems to be a tad expensive. Regardless, if you decide to try it, I would be very interested in seeing the results.

seen a tv show that talked about the chrome paint a while back. Not sure if I would chrome paint my vehicle or metal bumper, but it seems like it would be great for cars with plastic grills/headlight bezels

If any chromed bumper on your truck is rusting or peeling, it should be replaced under warranty no questions asked. The only exceptions would be an obvious case of misuse such as a collision. A properly fabricated bumper should remain peel or rust free for many years. Most bumpers remain rust free for several years while a very few may even rust on the dealer's lot. Poor fabrication and quality control happen from time to time and I'm sure The General would like that and any other defective part back for inspection and testing. No auto manufacturer likes to pay for a part twice not to mention the labour it takes to replace it.

Untill recently, I worked in the factory which has made the Silverado front bumpers for almost 20 years. Do substandard bumpers ever get out of he factory and onto trucks? Sure they do. But be assured, when that happens, no one feels worse than the people who make them. Like most people, we put a lot of pride into the work we do and the parts we make.

The Sierra front and all the Silverado and Sierra rear bumpers are made by a different company. But I am quite sure those workers put just as much effort and pride into their products too.

Paint might be pretty but it is still just paint. If anything, the quality of automotive paint has decreased at least temporarily over the past several years due to government mandated use of eco-friendly paints.

Under normal use, which will show more stone chips and corrosion, the chrome plated bumper on your truck or the painted hood and other parts?

Both painted and chromed front end parts can be protected by a clear plastic paint protective film such as that made by 3M and others.

The chrome bumpers on my own 09 Sierra are completely rust free and the bumpers of the 03 Silverado I traded in were also completely rust free after 7 years of ownership. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada and if a bumper was going to rust, this place with it's heavily salt covered roads in the winter, is the kind of place it would happen.

Cheers, lvlagnum.

PS: You'll notice I didn't make any jokes about our trucks having a BUMPER to BUMPER warranty. OOOPS! I guess I just did. hehehe

If I recall correctly, that paint requires the use of specialized spraying equipment in order for it to adhere to the project you're working on.
