Gmt800 6x9's

I took off the extended cab door panel of my 2006 Sierra WT to look at the factory speakers and noticed the the opening for the speaker are smaller than 6x9. Whats the deal?

 

Also, I can tap into the wire factory harness that hooks to the factory speaker, right? The wires I was looking at were yellow and black (rear driver side).

The stock speaker size is 4x6, yes its very small, I used my dremal to enlarge the openeing, I have either 5x7, or 6x8 I cant remember but I think its the 5x7's. I could not get a 6x9 to fit, its just to deep for the panel. I have mine under the door panel, so you cant even tell its been changed. For the wires I just cut them off, installed butt connectors then wired the new speakers.

 

Also the speaker grille in the door panel is only about 5x7, I was worried about not getting the sound through clear if the speaker was larger than the opening.

 

I replaced the fronts with 6.5" kenwoods, and im pretty sure 5x7 kenwoods in back, the upgrade cost me 1/2 days work and about $150 in speakers. It is VERY much worth it.

Cool, Thanks... I guess my only other question is, why does every speaker site show 6x9 will fit my truck? Did some GMT800 ext cab's come with that opening?
