Steering Wheel And Buttons Peeling

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who has an 07 Suburban LT with Ebony interior. The plastic paint is peeling heavily around on the edge of the two center panels. The truck only has 25k miles. Is there a TSB for this? If so, could he opt for the brushed silver that came on my truck (and appears to not be painted and it holding up great). Also, the fan speed control up/down is peeling (dual zone auto HVAC). I assume the only thing that can be done is to keep replacing it or does GM have an improved design?

Thanks for your help!

My wifes 07 LTZ Tahoe is doing the same thing. I am trying to find the part number for the silver one on my Denali steering wheel.

Here is the steering wheel on my 08 Tahoe, are you talking about the black plastic trim next to the steering wheel buttons and to the airbag?

Yes, that is exactly what I'm talking about. I'm also talking about the climate control fan speed buttons.

On the buttons, it must be related to armor all or something else causing paint to weaken. The buttons are fine on both of our GM vehicles. It's just the steering wheel trim between the airbag and steering wheel controls that is peeling on the Tahoe.

Isn't it still under warranty?

Won't the dealer replace them?

The truck is still under warranty, yes. But what is the point of replacing them with the same junk again? It will just keep doing the same thing over and over. BMW's are notorious for this same problem. BMW cover all their buttons, door handles, cup holders, center console, ect with this stupid idiotic thin a$$ paint that easily scratches and peels off in no time. At least GM limits it to just the buttons and steering wheel! There is none of this junk on the doors or cup holders.

No, its not tire gloss or interior protection. Its low quality materials and stupid designs. Why would anyone think it was a good idea to spray a thin layer of paint over plastic? I've seen this issue on many of the older GM trucks, but was mostly confined to the radio and auto climate control in the GMT 800. Why GM hasn't gotten the message and stopped the use of this cr@p, I don't know.

I heard about Volkswagen cars having all kinds of problems with interior plastic parts peeling, for the same reasons you mentioned.

I have the same issue with my steering wheel trim. I don't use any type of protectant or polish on it, just wipe it down with a damp cloth when cleaning. I'm currently at 23,000 miles, gonna have the dealer look at it when it goes in for tranny service around 30,000 miles.
