Steering Wheel And Buttons Peeling

I heard about Volkswagen cars having all kinds of problems with interior plastic parts peeling, for the same reasons you mentioned.

 

Yes, VW is also known for this. They wrap everything in this junk. At least they have some excuse because most of their vehicles are now made in Mexico as cheaply as possible.

The rubberized paint that covers the black trim on the steering wheel spokes is a peeling pretty bad on my wife's 07 Tahoe. I looked up the part number and price for brushed silver ones on gmpartsdirect. They are ~$40 each plus shipping. I think this is the route I'm taking. The rest of the buttons in both trucks are fine. I guess we just don't use them as much.

 

One of my co-workers has an Audi A6. We usually ride in his car when we go to lunch. It has the black rubberized paint on just about everything on the interior. Door grab handles, top of the interior door trim, dash, and the steering wheel. All of it is peeling off and it looks terrible.

How does the country of manufacture affect the quality of a part designed and specified by the parent company? It is not a location of manufacture problem, it is engineering cost out of parts that leads to these kinds of problems.

 

Back on topic, my 2007 Suburban steering wheel is starting to peel @ 30K miles. I don't know what the PO did, but I have never used any cleaner or Armour All type products on it, just water. I am going to have the dealer replace it during my "fix everything during the last two months of the warranty" visit. I have a whole list started.

The part numbers on the first page don't come up as being silver on gmpartsdirect.com. It just says steering wheel module.

My 07 Silverado LTZ has this problem,its almost all gone but spots here and there.

Looks crappy!!!

I'm wondering if a person can get these pieces with the fake wood look thats everywhere else on my truck???

Also whats involved in changing these out?

I really dont want to mess with the air bag....

Has anyone confirmed if thos are the correct part numbers that RAYGMC posted? Having the same issue on my LTZ and figured the titnium inserts are the way to go to avoid this peeling issue in the future.

Over in the Tahoe forums I found people listing these two part numbers for the aluminum trim ones 25824700 and 25824698. Slightly cheaper but now I am really confused about which is correct.

So I found the Brushed covers on gmpartsdirect but now my question is why is there a price difference between if I pick 2007 vs 2009 or 2010? As far as I know there should be no difference in these covers from 2007 to 2010. Can someone please provide some insight? Thanks........

 

About a $20 diff between the two. With older being more expensive...

So does GM. The steering wheels for GM trucks, and even entire trucks are now made in Mexico as cheaply as possible.

Actually, it does. Have you seen some clothing made in China? How one sleave is shorter than the other, and things are sawn together crooked? I have seen some horrible workmanship on leather seats made for GM vehicles in Mexico. It is not just the spec, but workmanship skill. And they often hire unskilled labor to do jobs where some skill is definitely required.

So after talking to MS3DALE and confirming the brushed aluminum part number for the steering wheen inserts I ordered these from gmpartsdirect 25824700 and 25824698. Total with shipping came to ~$80. Waiting on partsdirect to update me now on when they plan to ship them. Let the wait begin......

 

also fyi according to MS3DALE the other part number listed earlier in the post are listed for an escalade but from what he could tell they looked the same but cost more of course....

I had the same peeling issue with mine...dealer replaced the steering wheel. So far after 6k miles no issues.

You know...If you're going to start slamming somebody for shoddy work, you might want to work on your spelling, as it reduces the impact of your point.
