Slip Yoke Clunk Symptoms

I purchased a 2002 GMC 1500HD 1 week ago.

I noticed a pop / clunk last night when shifting from drive to reverse to drive............

Makes the noies in 2WD only - goes away in 4WD.

Searched all over the web and learned about the slip yoke clunk issue and want to confirm if this is the proper diagnosis for my situation.

All the u-joints seem fine but it does make a distinct "cracking" type of sound when I shake the rear driveshaft (by hand) at the transfer case tailshaft.

Sounds like it is coming from the tailshaft area vs. the u-joint.

Thanks for any help.

Pop it out and grease it, that will keep it quiet for about 2-3 months, before you have to do it again....Or you can get a slip yoke eliminator kit for it.

sorry aiden, drive to reverse is not the slip yoke, slip yoke is at take off ,a chirp/squawk ,you can do what aiden says ,can't hurt, but driveline clunk is nothing new and with this being a new vehicle to you ,drive it or get a tech/shop foreman to take a quick listen.

Thank you for the responses.

The truck has a 2 piece rear driveshaft.

Do I need to drop the carrier in the middle plus the yoke at the axle to pull out the slip yoke?

cut the clamp that holds the boot at the rear shaft end (mark boot and shaft with paint stick or equiv)then remove the frt peice but there is no movement realy to speak of for that yoke ,but whtever you want to do ya know
