Hey guys I'm looking for a cheap(if possible) setup for my laptop to read ODB II codes and real-time data. Ive been browsing around on eBay but hoping to get some knowledge or experience here first thanks.

At a minimum you will need an interface device and software. It also depends on how much you want to spend. Some software is freeware but you'll have to pay for an interface. These setups will only allow you to monitor and record logs.

 

You could start Here and google for OBD II for more sites to visit.

ScanXL Pro w/GM enhanced

 

Total cost: ~$320

 

I would suggest avoiding the cheap ELM 327 interface devices you can find on eBay. These are usually clones from China and may work for generic OBD PIDs but will give you problems with enhanced PIDs.

FYI: for that price you can go to HPTuners.com and spend ~$20 more and get a top notch cable setup and scanning software.
