Ford just released the updated ratings for the new 6.0 PSD which will be available as a mid-year release on the 03 SuperDuties.

FORD’S NEW 6.0-LITER POWER STROKE® DIESEL BOASTS BEST-IN-CLASS TORQUE

This is an article addressing the new assembly line built by International just for this new motor.  Notice how many motors they are capable of building per day.  That is well over twice the motors produced by Dmax LTD. per day.  I don't think Ford has anything to worry about as far as loosing it diesel sales title.

All I know is that if I were in the Market for an HD Id go with either a Cummins (easily and cheaply modded for Awesome power) or a PSD (Tried and true and even the new 6.0 PSD I would trust)... But as far as a D-Max...  :D I like the looks of gm's trucks but D-maxs as far as Ive seen are S*IT after even minor power mods and they just havent proven themselves as anything but a "grandpa-Tow-a-5th wheel" truck. My Dad has had a 99 PSD, an '01 Cummins, And is currently back with an '02 PSD... My grandpa has an '01 D-Max.. Gorgeous truck... And yeah it does have power... But we like to boost the power on our trucks being that we often pull loads of 13000 to 25000lbs over several good sized NM hills and the d-max doesnt take too well to any minor mods as far as our (yes) "extensive research" has shown..The Cummins we had was pushing 900lb ft torque and 400hp after a low priced addon and the 99 ford was fitted with a full banks... (700lb ft) As far as the current PSD we have, its stock and getting almost the exact same highway mileage as the D-max... Sorry for the book... Just my $.02... :)

Sorry, but if your going by specs, I just dont know how some of you guys can like Ford engines.

If your gonna be pulling stumps, or hauling trees over short distances, then Ford would be the way to go.  MAX tq and hp at around 1200 RPM is fine for all that, but what about when your on the friggin highway trying to get up a hill?

The Chevy 6.0 8.1 and Diesels' tq is reached from 3000 rpm, and down to 1800 rpm for the diesel.

Speaking strickly numbers, the GM engines are better suited for real world driving conditions.

Now, i dont know how good or bad Ford's trannys are, but i could give a crap about specified HP/TQ on the dyno.

If you want a work truck, HP/TQ at the wheel is what should be advertised.

Isnt it true that the friggin Allison absorbs about 25% of power??

That sucks, but i wonder what the Ford trannys do?

In the end, I feel its HP/TQ at the WHEELS that is important.

Who gives a crap if an engine is rated at 5/10/50 more hp/tq; can it put it on the ground is a better question.

How come when GM leapfrogged the competition, nobody cared and then the comments like "The DuraMax is unproven" come about.  The DuraMax has been out for two years now and in those two years, I can count the number of D-Max's that have come back for warranty service on one hand.

Now ford comes out with their new PSD, which essentially just meets the competition and exceeds it by a whopping 5lbs-ft of torque and all the raves and praise follow it.

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused about you guys   ???

You're letting GM's history with the 6.5 Turbo Diesel cloud the future for the D-Max right out of the hole.  You should also be doing the same with the PSD as it lost some pretty significant displacement by going to 6.0 liters.  That means, it is making more power out of less which puts more stress on components than before.

Sorry, after driving that C4500 with the D-Max that I posted in the general section, I don't think GM Powertrain has anything to worry about between ford and Dodge.  Even with the front driver's side caliper dragging, this truck which weighs more and is larger than my 2500HD, simply left it in the dust!  Go read that thread, there's also other intangible factors involved such as serviceability that are important to me and GM is light years ahead of either ford or Dodge in this regard.  So when one of those "unreliable and unproven" D-Max's come back, we can get them back on the road quicker than the other two brands!   :D

As far as gas motors go, probably not.  ####, I'd probably even go so far as to say you are right in that regard.  I've never been a big fan of most Ford/Dodge gas motors.  Especially when compared to the BBC.

But when it comes to the diesels, they should probably be worried.  The Dmax is more then capable of making good reliable power, as it has proven over the last 3 years.  But it is now the oldest design on the market, and is up against diesels that make well over 600ft-lbs of torque in medium duty applications compared to the 520 of the Dmax.  These other diesel are already offered with 100ft-lbs more then the Dmax which would lead most people to believe they can handle more signifigant upgrades.  And don't forget that this new PSD will have been placed in medium duty International trucks for over a year by the time Ford starts using them, and the ISBe Cummins has been available in Europe for over 3 years.  Thats part of the reason their isn't quite as much talk of them being unproven.

Now don't get me wrong, the Dmax is proving to be a great motor.  But I don't think that GM has nothing to worry about.  As a matter of fact, the better be busy working on their next upgrade after the 04 model year.  Rumor has in that Ford will be up rating the 6.0PSD again after GM releases its 04 numbers.

coud it be that the reason why the new PSD has more hp and torque is because they already did a mod to their puter like the EZ AMp does to a DMax? Im not vey informed on this issue but i was wondering.

    • I’m out of ideas on this truck. 2020 Silverado 1500. 5.3 135,000 miles. Has a p0308 and p050d codes. Smokes From exhaust when cold. Compression test passed. New plugs, wires and coil on cyl 8. Same issue. New coil on 8, no change. Replaced injectors, no change. Bore scope showed oil pooled on the piston after sitting overnight. Pulled head and had machine shop check it out. No cracks. Stem seals looked good, replaced anyways. He also ground valve seats. Put it all back together and still have the same issue. Bore scope shows oil on the piston again. Leaning towards maybe a cracked ring but unsure. Cylinder looked good when the head was off, no scoring or scratches. Any ideas on what else I should look for?  Appreciate the help
    • Just want to make sure it is covered by Special Coverage N232395310 Evaporative Emission Purge Pump 2021 Silverado 1500 Custom 2.7L L3B ~100k miles I'm getting DTCs P146B and P146F. VIN 3GCPWBEK2MGxxxxxx   I spoke to a person that works at GM and he said it is not covered after checking my VIN.   Is there anyone here who currently works for a GM/Chevrolet dealership and has access to GM Global Warranty Management / Investigate Vehicle History who could explain how the VIN eligibility is determined?   thank you
    • Thanks for all that information, I might purchase one and see if it will work for me, if not they may let me return it! Yes for sure the tires are definitely within limit for my truck empty, and when I do tow I'll definitely make sure to raise the rear psi for the amount of weight that's going to be on it.
    • Yes exactly, more and more these days people/companies are afraid of liability issues so its easier just to say no rather than risk putting their neck on the line.    I will say with the Autel unit or when I used it last year on my truck, it wasn't like I could choose the 2025 model year or even the 2024 model year as that option was not there to manipulate the placard pressures but had to go back to 2023 or there abouts and then it showed up as an option, odd but that was how the software was then and I can't say one way or the other now as they throw out updates every so often. I still would talk to your tire dealer though to start with and they may do it for nothing but also they may have a comment on a better unit to purchase. All I know is that one of the large tire shops in my area happens to use these Autel units for their use and set them up to use the wifi and all of that jazz for constant updating because each tire tech has one handed to them by the shop but I just plugged it into my laptop to update it and yes if one is bought it has to be registered so you can get the link to do updates and then the unit has to be updated before its even used. I am not at all techy so it took me a bit but anyway just a heads up for anything you buy, most likely it will need to be connected to a computer to access the internet to have it updated to the latest software version before you can put it to use.   If your truck is near empty, those tire pressures you listed are a very safe upper range pressures to carry the weight, both the front and rear as I know they could be run lower yet with an empty truck. And if its a trailer and not some motorcycle your going to strap onto the front of your truck on a rack, you shouldn't have a need to inflate your front tires if your at 55 front already, its the rear ones that would need more air if you have much hitch weight.
    • Thank you, I'll check that Autel scanner out and see if it will work for me! Ya I can see GM's point of view if they lower the psi set value for someone and the person sell's the truck and the new owner puts the factory tires back on then their could be liability issues cause the psi warning light wasn't coming on when the tires were under inflated for towing their load and then it might be able to be traced back to GM lowering it.
