Video - Text Messaging Car Accident

here are the facts.

Teen Driver Cell Phone and Texting Statistics

•Despite the risks, the majority of teen drivers ignore cell phone driving restrictions.

•Talking on a cell phone while driving can make a young driver's reaction time as slow as that of a 70-year-old.

•56% of teenagers admit to talking on their cell phones behind the wheel, while 13% admit to texting while driving. (Note: Because this information was given voluntarily by teens, actual cell phone use numbers may be much higher.)

•48% of young Americans from 12-17 say they've been in a car while the driver was texting.

•52% of 16- and 17-year-old teen drivers confess to making and answering cell phone calls on the road. 34% admit to text messaging while driving.

•In 2007, driver distractions, such as using a cell phone or text messaging, contributed to nearly 1,000 crashes involving 16- and 17-year-old drivers.

•Over 60% of American teens admit to risky driving, and nearly half of those that admit to risky driving also admit to text messaging behind the wheel.

•Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% every year.

•Almost 50% of all drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 are texting while driving.

•Over one-third of all young drivers, ages 24 and under, are texting on the road.

•Teens say that texting is their number one driver distraction.

Cell Phones, Text Messaging, and Car Accident Information for All Drivers

•Talking on a cell phone causes nearly 25% of car accidents.

•One-fifth of experienced adult drivers in the United States send text messages while driving.

•In 2008 almost 6,000 people were killed and a half-million were injured in crashes related to driver distraction.

•At any given time during daylight hours in 2008, more than 800,000 vehicles were driven by someone using a hand-held cell phone.

•4 out of every 5 accidents (80%) are attributed to distracted drivers. In contrast, drunk drivers account for roughly 1 out of 3 (33%) of all accidents nationally.

•Texting while driving is about 6 times more likely to result in an accident than driving while intoxicated.

•People who text while driving are 23% more likely to be in a car accident.

•A study of dangerous driver behavior released in January 2007 by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. found that of 1,200 surveyed drivers, 73% talk on cell phones while driving. The same 2007 survey found that 19% of motorists say they text message while driving.

•In 2005, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 10% of drivers are on handheld or hands free cell phones at any given hour of the day.

•A study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Motorists found that motorists who use cell phones while driving are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves.

•In 2002, the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis calculated that 2,600 people die each year as a result of using cellphones while driving. They estimated that another 330,000 are injured.

•According to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, drivers talking on cell phones are 18% slower to react to brake lights. They also take 17% longer to regain the speed they lost when they braked

•Of cell phone users that were surveyed, 85% said they use their phones occasionally when driving, 30% use their phones while driving on the highway, and 27% use them during half or more of the trips they take.

•84% of cell phone users stated that they believe using a cell phone while driving increases the risk of being in an accident.

•The majority of Americans believe that talking on the phone and texting are two of the most dangerous behaviors that occur behind the wheel. Still, as many as 81% of drivers admit to making phone calls while driving.

•The number of crashes and near-crashes linked to dialing is nearly identical to the number associated with talking or listening. Dialing is more dangerous but occurs less often than talking or listening.

•Studies have found that texting while driving causes a 400% increase in time spent with eyes off the road.

Study Reveals the Dangers of Texting While Driving

The following statistics come from a study conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI):

•Of all cell phone related tasks - including talking, dialing, or reaching for the phone - texting while driving is the most dangerous.

•Teen drivers are four times more likely than adults to get into car crashes or near crash events directly related to talking on a cell phone or texting.

•A car driver dialing a cell phone is 2.8 times more likely to get into a crash than a non-distracted driver.

•A driver reaching for a cell phone or any other electronic device is 1.4 times more likely to experience a car crash.

•A car driver talking on their phone is 1.3 times more likely to get into an accident.

•A truck driver texting while driving is 23.2 times more likely to get into an accident than a trucker paying full attention to the road.

•A truck driver dialing a cell is 5.9 times more likely to crash.

•A trucker reaching for a phone or other device is 6.7 times more likely to experience a truck accident.

•For every 6 seconds of drive time, a driver sending or receiving a text message spends 4.6 of those seconds with their eyes off the road. This makes texting the most distracting of all cell phone related tasks.

its a 600 dollar fine here for texting while driving...too many people do it and the sad part is nobody cares because they think popping a text off quick to a friend to say "hey whats up" is more important then trying to keep your vehicle from turning the kid on the bike in front of you into part of the drivetrain....

I care.

I see idiots texting and wandering all the time in my daily travels. If nobody else is around on the highway I do my level best to catch them in a "surprise" moment. You'd laugh your ass off at the reactions and panic I see when they think I am about to run them over!

Dumbasses need to learn that driving 70 mph and texting is deadly.

I'd gladly kill them if I would not get caught.

I bought a phone that has a full QWERTY keyboard mainly because I prefer to send texts will full words and proper punctuation, but also because it's pretty hard to text while driving, as it requires both hands.

I watched this and even though I know its a PSA message and it was staged, what really touched me the most was the toddler and infant in the other car. I have two kids myself 2 year old / 3 month old infant which are the most precious things in my life and to see innoscent kids like that suffer, really upsets me personally espicially when incidents and accidents are caused by stupid ass teenagers who act and think they are on top of the world. Thats why everytime we as a family go anywhere, I drive cause I drive extremely aggressive and I am "NOT" afraid to use my horn and roll my window down and give people the bird when I see stupidity. If it bothers them and they want to get out and fight, ill stop and whoop some ass if need be. :dunno:

You drive aggressively with your family in the truck?

:headscratch:

Well I define aggressive such as being more alert, trying to predict what the driver near me is going to do. People here in North Carolina dont have much common sense when it comes to driving at least here in town. I see a lot of stupidity on the road so I prefer to drive compared to my wife because she is used to driving in Germany so she is too soft behind the wheel. we normally drive the explorer or her jetta, my truck is pretty much my drive to work and back ride.

There are far too many distractions nowadays, and most of us are guilty of at least some of them. I prefer to conduct my calls while in the truck as I hate talking on my phone in public and rarely have time around the house. On long trips it's a given that I will try to call my brother or someone else to break up the monotony. Then again, I only call one or two people regularly and use maybe 300 minutes a month tops. A hands free device is usually used and I pay more attention to the road than to the phone. Texting is something I try to avoid altogether, which annoys the hells out of my wife. When she actually has a cell phone she sends and receives thousands of texts a month, almost all of which are sent while she is at home with the kids. She texts me and I call her back, leading to her getting pissed off which I find quite humorous.

But enough about me. Text messaging is the ultimate means of indirect communication for most people nowadays. Some of my coworkers have their phones constantly going off with a new message, and one Soldier in particular is extremely bad about texting while driving. The Department of Defense banned talking and texting while driving government vehicles, and using a cell phone without a handsfree device on a military installation will lead to MPs pulling you over real quick.

Back in December a young lady from one of my high schools was involved in a car accident. I not sure whether a cell phone was involved or not, but she was ejected from the vehicle and had the car land on top of her. She passed away a couple of months later and the entire community was grief stricken by the loss of this popular young lady. Though I did not know her personally I felt a tremendous loss as well as my job is to help ensure these young peoples futures. Even after the accident shook the students at the school I'd drive around and see kids I recognized preoccupied with their phones while not paying attention to the road.

As for the video, it was graphic. My sick sense of humor overcame that, though, and I found the first bit rather funny. After the initial violence of the accident the mood becomes much more somber. That said, I will share this video with my coworkers with the hopes that they get the message.

I saw this video about a year ago and I thought it was well done. Some might argue that its too graphic, but this really drives the point home for an issue that is very common now a days.

And it's not graphic, it's realistic!

That video is well done.

That video is not really graphic VS. reality.

30 yrs as a firefighter / paramedic gives me the ability to make the above statement.

The secondary impact of the car striking the previous accident is not that uncommon.

The severity of the impact was even well done.

In real life the injuries would have been far more blood and guts, but the make up presents the message without taking away from the message that is being sent.

And the little kid making the statement, "mommy and daddy will not wake up," is very real, you will hear this from young children when they notice that there parents (or other family/friend ) are unresponsive they think they are sleeping and do not have the understanding as to what is occurring as most young children that age do not understand severe illness / death.

Thankfully, its a good thing.

Please remember that the message: Distracted Driving can and will cause Harm and Death.

I have seen many times what that video portrays in real life not a video.

Please have a safe and happy Memorial day weekend, please take time to thank a vet.
