I picked up some GM synthetic 75W90 at the dealer today for a customer's vehicle.

Says right on the bottle-"New grape scent" or somesuch.

Smells like grapes! Well, gear oil and grapes.

 

Why?

probably b/c gear oil is the nastiest smelling fluid in a vehicle.... just a guess though lol

Gear lubes contain sulfur and that's what smells. Sulfur is an extreme pressure additive.

 

Probably has the scent to distinguish it from some other gear lube product during assembly.

 

I don't know if its still the case but the GM synthetic gear lube used to be a Texaco product as mentioned in a service bulletin some years back.
