Starting My 04 Silverado Build, Need Some Advise...

Ok, So you see my truck in on my sig. I just begun my audio project. I decided to get rid of the 15in Kicker L7 I have had in my garage for 2 years just collecting dust to start a new project. Originally that sub was going to go in my Colorado, however it never made it in there and has done nothing but collect dust on a shelf. I recently bought my 04 silverado and LOVE it!! I am going to keep this truck forever. All that aside, I do not have the desire to take up my back seat with a box just for this sub, and also don't want to be advertising it for some jack@ss to come break my window and steal it, so I have been reading on here about different sub boxes for our trucks and quickly realized that Subthump seemed to be the ones catering to us and building boxes that will fit higher end equipment.

I managed to pick up the Ultra Deep box for $135 (with the raised "Silverado"), and now need to decide on on some subs to drop in. I had these in mind:

Kicker CVX 12's

Or

Fosgate P3D212's

Or

Alpine SWR-1243D 12in's

All being relatively the same price.... I don't mind spending more for the best, but also want to get the best bang for my buck too.

I will also need to decide on replacement speakers for the front, rear's (most likely gonna ket the infinity kappas), amps for the speakers (not sure if this matters too much) and the subs(from what I have read I will want to get a class D mono for the subs), and a HU (most likely going to get a JVC HU bc I waant the build in HD radio). But for now, I am looking to pull the trigger on one of the above selections. Which one's would you choose... preferably from people that have tried these.

Thanks for your input!!

12" Eclispe Subs

or

12" JL Subs

Pretty nice subs as well. Worth checking out at least. I linked to subs that have a mounting depth under 7" as your box stated it required. Of the three you listed, I like the Alpines.

For the doors, I would recommend the Alpine SPX-17REF. I have these in my truck and have been extremely satisfied with their performance. I believe you have 4x6 in your rear doors, but I'm not certain. I would modify the rear's to fit the 6 1/2" Alpines in the rear. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, go with Boston Acoustic 4 x6's.

For I am running the JL HD600/4 for the door speakers and love it. I plan on adding the JL HD750/1 for my subs once I decide on what I am doing for subs. You pay a lot more for the JL amps, but there is no question in my mind they are worth it.

Hi Savage, thanks for your reply. It seems that the 2 subs you listed are more "low-end" type products. I know JL is an excellent name in car audio, but those particular subs seem like the low-end series from them. May I ask why you feel these are better than the 3 I originally selected? Do have experience with these?

Thanks!

John

I had a pair of the 10" models and they really worked hard. At the same time I agree with you that they are quite affordable for JL subs. To be honest, this is the very reason I haven't finished my build, because I keep going back and forth with what I want to do for subs. If I could fit a pair of W7's in under the seat, I'd be done, but I can't. I'm obsessed with hiding everything. I like getting in my truck and not seeing anything except for the HU and still have phenomenal sound. That's just me. I have never had good luck with Kicker or Rockford Fosgate equipment. I have with Alpine, JL Audio and Kenwood. Granted this was 5 years ago and a lot may have changed with Kicker and RF, but I just don't think their equipment is worth it. I have been experimenting with making a custom box to hold dual 10" W7's. I have made a mock up and I can't the seats to lay flat. The 10" W7 needs 8" and I can get 7 1/2" no problem, but the last 1/2 is going to require seat modifications. It just isn't worth it to do it to me. I may just throw 4 8" W7's or dual 13TW5 and be done with it. Not sure. I'd really like to hear what you decide to do and what your opinions are to be honest. I will say the Alpines are pretty sweet. I have heard those IRL and they are pretty nice bang for the buck.

Another suggestion - http://www.crutchfield.com/s_1081209W/Infi...kappa&ssi=0

What I had planned on getting before I found out they wouldn't fit in my NBS Silverado.

Wow, I really like the looks of these, and they are in the same price range as the others I was looking at. I have owned infinity speakers before and though they were great, but never the subs. Seems like they got good reviews for being nice crisp subs on crutchfield too.

I mostly listen to rock and more of the under-ground hip-hop; Not that shitty Lil Bow wow stuff and the like... so tight bass for the rock is good, but there are gonna be times where I want it to "bump" also. You think these will still do that?

@Savage

I hear you on the W7 thing!! I would love that too, but for the price I think I will stick to the next level down. If your really wanting to do the W7's go check out Sunthump.com where I got my box, they make one exactly like the one I got, but offers 8in mounting depth for the 7's. If the box itself was not as much as 1 sun I most likely would have gone that route, but I got such a killer deal on it, I am willing to live with it for now.

Personally I have never owned any Alpine gear, I did have 2-12in RF's about 10 years ago that were good but not great and eventually the NM heat killed them. I moved on to JL's from there, but had to sell them when I got my Colorado. I thought I was sold on the Kicker's bc of how everyone says they pound like no other but I am reconsidering them now for the infinity's....errrr this is so freakin hard!!

@Emerson

What kind of wattage should I throw at the infinities? Have you actually heard them in action?

Thanks guys!! More to come....

Back when I was hoping to get a system, I was gonna get the 10" version of that sub and this amp - http://www.crutchfield.com/p_108R1600A/Inf...y+amp&ssi=0 Probably a better amp you can get, I was gonna be getting it for $120 though.

Here is a review of the subs from sonic electronix -

I have never heard them, but I called into crutchfield a lot to get help and they always mentioned how nice of a sub it was.

What is your budget?

that box won't fin in a GMT-900 CC...if it did, I'd own it and be done. Thanks. I've heard the Alpines and the Kappa's. The Alpines are more bang for the buck (Kappa's are around $90 more per sub), but the Kappa's are much nicer sound at higher volumes and can take a beating (look at the sensitivity or efficiency rating of 91 vs. 85-higher number means more power converted to sound). I thought those would be out of your price range being around $250 a sub. if you can swing it, they would really be worth it. Throw a JL HD750/1 at them and you will love them.

Found those Kappas for $137 at Amazon link
