Oil Viscosity

Just had my oil changed yesterday at my local Chevy dealer. Noticed last night as I was filing the recepit that it says the replaced the oil with 10w30. My maual says 5w30 for my 2007 5.3L. Is this something I should be concerned with? Should I call them back and ask them to change it with 5w30?

It's a very reputable Chevy/Cady dealer and have always had good dealings with them. Thought maybe since it has really hot this summer they were putting a thicker oil in, but my manual says nothing about any other that 5w30. Any ideas?

I would want to know why they did that. It is not thicker, it just wont flow as freely in cold weather. Dealership should know the correct oil to use.

how many miles? i know of a truck that the dealer threw in 10w for quite a few changes...claiming it helped the break in

I've always used 10w-30 in my pickup, it's o.k. to use as long as it doesn't get below about 10 degrees Fahrenheit where you live. In the summer when it's hot, it's a good idea to use a thicker oil.

0w, 5w, 10w, etc.is not weight but an somewhat arbitrary rating based on the oil low temperature flow and pumping characteristics - SAE J300 (1999) Motor Oil Grades- Low Temperature Specifications. I say somewhat arbitrary in that an oil that meets the 0w standard can be rated 5w or 10w because of the myth that "W" means weight ( it means winter) and 95-99% of the folks that recommend/sale/change oil believe this myth. We'll all heard "I would not use a 0 weight oil in your car.".

i run 5w-30 because thats what the truck calls for...if the truck called for anything else it would have it, the owner's manuel is your friend

You'll be fine with the 10w... but i personally always run whats called for and would make sure to ask for 5w-30 next time

 

BUT... it may be worth a call to the service department and just raise the concern. Be nice about it, and who knows, maybe they'll knock a few bucks off your next oil change
