Heater Line Quick Disconnect

I'm looking at the quick disconnect on the heater hose of my '99 Silverado and have no clue how it "quickly" disconnects? On line I see a couple of tools but honestly don't see how they work.

 

Are the clips on the back side where I cant see???

If I cut the fitting off can I just clamp the hose onto that nipple??

 

Additionally, looks like I'll have to order the new disconnect so I'm without a vehicle until they get here. Can I disconnect both hoses, couple them together and just be without the heater?

I think the disconnects squeeze somehow to unlatch. But, yes you can just cut the fitting off and attach the hoses with clamps like they were on older vehicles. Yes you can just hook them two hoses together and be without a heater.
