Hid Problems...

Whenever the HID lights are on I lose some radio stations, once you turn the lights off the radio stations come back. Anyone else experience this problem or have any ideas for a solution?

Thanks!

My buddy did in his SS Silverado. From what I hear it is somewhat common. Somethin to do with frequency disturbance. I may be way off but I thought this kind of thing can happen with certain spark plug wires too.

That is the most logical explaination as any Frequency band stronger than radio signal will kill the radio signal. However, this should not happen on FM band as FM band doesn't not use Amplitude Modulation which is the most common result of Spark plug and or other stray engine generated frequencies. If FM radio stations are fading then there is an electrical interference to the circuit board of the radio itself. This means most likely that there is varying Votage to the radio unit...

Yep! I had this problem in my Colorado. It's the ballast of the HID's, when they lights are turned on it, you can get static on radio stations as well as all CB channels.

You could try relocating the Ballasts. I have no issues with radio stations with mine and I have HID low beams as well as fogs...

FYI, my low beam ballasts are mounted to the inside of the radiator support and the ones for the fogs are mounted to the supports for the bumper above the air dam.

i have them for my fogs and my ballasts are located the same as yours and my radio barely works. but i never use it XM.. the only reason i noticed it is because when i put them on in my garage i tried them and it killed the radio in the garage when i turned them on

Dont know if it makes any difference at all but i got my HID's from EBAY from Lighting623. I would think that a ballast is a ballast..

Normally a ballast is a ballast. Is it mounted directly to the metal? What we used to do in stereo installs was to run a ground strap to the hood. Because a ballast essentially a transformer, the harmonics produced by the transformer will interupt certain frequencies maybe all. Your HID ballasts hum the same way a large transformer does you just can't hear it. But your radio can! Are you using the truck body as your negative terminal and your ground? This could be causing a problem. Try using the negative terminal for negative (even though it connects to the frame) and connect your ground to the body. I don't have HID's so take this advice for what it is worth.

Oh, one other thing you may try that is prolly different between our setups. I am NOT powering the HID Ballast off of the feed from the headlight. I have independent relays directly off of the battery that are closed by the voltage from the headlight circuit.

In my colorado, I had wrapped my ballasts in aluminium tape to reduce the noise which is did slightly.

On my silverado I no longer have that problem. The HID setup, I took the time to do a nice install. All ballasts are mounted to the frame of the truck for both my low beams and fog lights. I suggest relocating your ballasts, or worst case get a new setup.
