What's are best practices for troubleshooting a cruise control?

Fuses, and this may sound crazy, but on some years if you have tail lights out the cruise will not engage. Please be more specific with the problems if possible.

Opps thanks.............So many post about the new style cruise problems didnt even look at the year he had. Same site can narrow down the different years if it was a factory issue also. Could be a vaccum port problem if it is a 99.

I'm going to make the assumption it's an 800 series as well....

So everything works as normal with the exception that you aren't able to maintain a set speed correct? If that's the case it sounds like the switch is doing it's thing and the PCM is sending the data to the IPC. You might have an issue under the hood w/ the cruise control module. I'm looking at 02 wiring diagrams which should be similiar to the 99 if it indeed is an 800 series truck....please verify.

It is the 99 Sierra SLE 5.3L Vortec... and that is correct cannot set speed which means it can't maintain it as well.

When you set the cruise the light in the IPC illuminates and if you hit the brake or turn the cruise off the light goes out correct? Just trying to make sure I'm reading you correctly LOL....if you hit resume does it illuminate again?

Do this first before we get into wiring....pop the hood and make sure the cable that runs from the cruise control module (mounted on the right side of the firewall) to the throttle body is connected.

Found the root cause of this problem, this weekend. When I was doing the fuel pump work, I had pulled the Cruise Control connection off of throttle body to see if I could adjust the horizontal throttle bar (which I found it cannot be adjusted)...

Anyway the plastic clip that hold the CC to the TB (throttle body)... was damaged when I took it off first time, it had subsequently come off again, while driving. I reattached and put in a little ingenuity to hold it this time (duct tape)... Until I can get a new cable for it which would include the plastic holder...
