Driving 60 Miles In 4-wheel Hi On Dry Pavement.

Hello all, I am new here and am seeking your professional answers. Left the Hunting lease the other day not realizing that I was in 4 wheel Hi. I know that sounds pretty darn stupid but that it! I was towing my ATV thinking Darn whats with my truck! never looking to the indicator lights on the side, I have a 2006 Cheverloet Silverado regular cab Z71.

 

when i finally reached home parked the atv cleaned off the truck and repositioned the truck in the driveway i noticed I was in 4 WHEEL- HI NOT AUTO!!!! the only thing i can think of doing is drain the fluid in the transfer case.

 

any suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Nothing to worry about IMO. I did the same thing with my '02 a few years back. I was pulling the boat out of the water, got distracted and forgot to take it out of 4HI after leaving the marina. I traveled about the same distance as you and didn't realize it until I got to the house and was backing the boat in the driveway. The truck was about a year hold at that point and I drove it 4 more years with zero issues. You'll be fine.

Just be glad you weren't in 4-LO!!!!!

4 wheel hi is meant to be used in situations like that. I've used it pulling fertilizer trailers, so I wouldn't spin every time I try and pull off from a red light. Nothing to worry about.

Thank u , for your quick response, I had an 86 chevy K10 3 SPEED W/ A GRANNY gear, when in low as with the newer models u can tell, my only explantion is that it has been very hot and humid here in the south , I would of thought i would have felt it more? I was also looking into changing my tranny fluid (dex VI) i have 40,000 on the truck i am sending a pic (hopefully)

i had just installed Toyo open country AT 285s and it looks very nice, always change the oil at 3000, no matter what the indicator says , so i change it at 50% that comes out to about 3000 miles for me

4 hi is for driving on the roadway at road speeds or what ever speed road conditions will allow you to do safely. You did not hurt a thing..........Scott

From '09 owners manual:

 

Notice: Driving on clean, dry pavement in

Four-Wheel-Drive High or Four-Wheel-Drive Low for

an extended period of time may cause premature

wear on your vehicle’s powertrain. Do not drive on

clean, dry pavement in Four-Wheel-Drive High or

Four-Wheel-Drive Low for extended periods of time.

 

OP, you most likely did not drive far enough to damage it...you can discusss it with a good service rep...

4-HI is not meant for dry streets!

 

Granted you probably didn't cause any damage with that one trip, so i wouldn't worry too much about it. But being that it's a 2006, how many miles do you have on it? You may be due for a T-Case fluid change regardless... so now may be a good time.

Depending on how the truck is used... 50k is generally a good time for a drain/fill.

 

It couldn't hurt to do it a bit earlier for piece of mind. I always favor maintenance overkill rather than neglect.
