08 Transmission Issue

I have an 08 silverado 4wd...I just turned 51k and thought I would change the trans filter/fluid.

went to the parts store got the filter kit and 5 qts dexron vi.....swapped it out and now it will barely move in drive.

parts store said capacity was 5qts when changing filter.which is what I put in..but I only have approx 2.5-3 qts of waste fluid.

truck running on level in park reads below the cross hatch about 1/2 way between cold mark and hot after I drained approx 1 qt back out ( should be 4qts new in there).

dash trans temp reads 142*......is it overfull, which seems likely in comparison with the waste oil qty,or is it under full according to the stick

Always fill by using the dipstick measurement. Don't just dump in 5 qts 'cause some parts guy said so. Check the fluid level when hot if you can. Any chance while removing your pan you farked up the electronic solenoids? Others have had this problem due to the limited area to get the pan off and out.

A thought.... did you remove the old filter seal from the bore? Did you install a new one? Did you get the filter properly seated?

good questions...I was as gentle as could be ...so as not to damage anything...dont think I did,....but what would I be looking for? broken wire?

yes I got the seal out as well...was a pain...had to tap the new one in lightly...then the filter would stay seated.was careful not to touch/damage anything else.

I'm going to drop the pan again...check everything once more...then refill a qt at a time...what fun!

thanks for the input so far! :)

Also, did you get the filter firmly seated into the seal. Filter should be right up against the valve body and very secure

yes the filter was all the way in.

I drained the pan again...filled a qt at a time...still the same...must have screwed something up inside...it will drive somewhat normal if you pull into 1-2nd...I think its taking off in 2nd...wont shift...the engine clatters...and then the check engine light came on.

So its parked until monday...calling the local shop and have them fix it....cant be anything too serious...just something I cant figure out laying on my back with oil to my elbows.

Now my back and neck are screwed up from laying on crushed stone for half the day....I keep forgetting I'm too old for this crap! :P

thanks for the advice...I'll report back with the diagnosis

Did you get the shift bracket reinstalled and tightened down? Have you checked the electrical connector that is in the area of the shift bracket to make sure nothing became disconnected?

OK...so I took it to the local trans shop...pulled the pan...solenoid came unplugged...all better now.

and the guy said in the future he would do the trans service...complete drain and filter..check differentials..and lube the undercarriage..then test drive ...for $95....cant beat that price

You know I have built engines partial and complete..always done my own repairs...but transmissions have always been my nemesis...lesson learned.

thanks again for all the help!!!

You just have to make sure you have clearance at the back of the pan before you slide it forward and down. I usually loosen the trans mount and raise the rear of the trans a couple of inches. Glad you got it taken care of. I figured it was going to be a solenoid problem from your description

You've been there, done that, right Robert? At least a few times.
