Magnaflow Drone Problem

Recommended Posts

I have a 18" long 3" center in side out magnaflow welded in place of the stock muffler. It drones like crazy from 1500-2200 rpm's. Other than at that range I like the sound. In fact, it is very quiet above 2200 rpm's and sounds great from idle to 1500. I'm looking for suggestions on how to tame the drone.

I spend a lot of time on the highway and it is driving me crazy.

It is an 2004, ext. cab w/ 6.5' box and a 5.3.

Thanks,

hey, you are not kidding. the dron on mine is not fun. have the dual rear out kit for the past 4 years and it never changes. I wish I could get it to go away , too.

Putting a resonator after the muffler should possibly help.

i was reading last night at some other sites and seems that they put a "bullett racing muffler" in front of the magnaflows to get rid of the drone?

How about moving the muffler as far back to the rear axle as you can. It helped on my truck and I have a 11" magnaflow.

I have the magnaflow cat-back kit. I don't think I can move it back any more than is unless paying someone to redo all the piping.

Oh, I meant that comment for jjrobo. You still might be able to move the muffler back, depending on how straight the pipe is going to the rear end.

I may be able to move it another 6-8", but that is about it. I'm thinking about putting a resonator or cherry bomb on in front of it. Has anybody had any luck with that?

Every little bit helps, because the sound waves are just bouncing off your cab right now.

Mine does it too. Has gotten worse over the almost 2 years I've had it. Going on a 10 hour drive down the highway next week. That part is definitely going to suck.

Thanks for the link. I have been looking at having a resonator welded in front of the muffler. I think it will fit if I have them move the muffler back a few more inches. I've got to do something soon. It is driving me nuts and is embarrassing when I'm driving people around for work. My dog doesn't even like to go for rides in the truck anymore.

I have a flowmaster on my 6.0 and it drones. I spoke to a guy at a muffler shop and he suggested the same thing. The muffler he suggested is only about 12" long. Does any one know anybody who has tried this? It is a cheap fix, the guy quoted me $75 for the Bullet installed. I was also told it was more effective if installed backwards. Any thoughts?
