2008 Silverado Musty A/c

The A/C works great in my 2008 Silverado Z71, but when I first crank up the A/C, the air smells musty. Located in Hot and Humid S/E Texas. Will hit 105 today.

Had the same problem in my 2003, and used some freshener I spraed in the intake and vents, but that was only a short tem cover.

My 97 and 2000 had a filter under the glove box, but can not seem to locate a filter on newer ones.

Any suggestions?

I'd say to replace the filter. I've had that problem on an older vehicle. I think it's on the right side under the glove box, you have to take off pretty much the whole panel there.

There should be instructions in the owners manual too....

I find often in hot humid weather that initial activation of AC (briefly) elicits a musty smell, but goes away quickly.

That said, musty smells are usually a sign of moisture.

Check your drain for blockage.

Don't know if your year is equipped with a cabin filter. Worth checking out though.

If you do have one, it is overdue for change.

There is no filter on the gmt 900's. Take it to your dealer and tell him about the musty smell. If you have RPO codes CJ2,CJ3,or CJ7 there is an afterblow function that can be turned on to prevent evaporator core odor. Turn this option ON in the HVAC Control Module instead of installing the Electronic Evaporator Kit referred to in the Air Conditioning Odor bulletin 99-01-39-004A.

I turn my AC off 1-2 miles before I reach home and kick the fan speed up to dry out the evaporator each time. It works like a charm.

They stopped putting an in cabin filter in there in 2002/early 2003. Spray some Lysol in the vents.
