Switching To Synthetic Oil

My truck has almost 99,000 miles on it right now and I have been thinking about switching to synthetic motor oil for a while. Is this something that could still benefit my truck's engine, or at this point am I better off just sticking with conventional oil the dealer has been using?

With properties of better cleaning agents, better lubrication and lower operating temps, I say yes. As long as you don't have any leaks, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm a firm believer in synthetics and one of my favorites is mobil 1.

ive always been under the impression that if you have used reg. oil all the trucks life for more than 60-75k miles, and you switch to synthetic now you will find the smallest of leaks that dino oil covers up... IMO i would go with a high mileage oil..

That is what I was worried about. I don't have any issues now with leaks besides possible minor leaks I don't even notice that come with the territory at this mileage. Although, if I put in synthetic I may start to see it leak some. So I feel my best bet is probably to stick with the same oil I have been using. No problems yet! I never go over 3,000 miles and service my truck frequently so no worries.

Thats a myth... If you have leaks, it will leak, if you don't you'll be fine.

I bought my truck used & they put Synthetic Blend in it & I switched over to Full Synthetic Mobil 1 @ over 100K & it doesn't leak at all & it has cooler temps.

BOUGHT MY TRUCK NEW:

HAD THE SAME QUESTION 2 MONTHS AGO. I had 90,000kms on my 2007 GMC sierra 4.8L when I posted and asked about switching and you know what? I was burning about just under a quart of oil (every 5000kms oil change) since 60,000kms. And guess what? After the first oil change since the switch, (I had the syn in there for 5000kms.) Now I plan to run 10,000kms or Oil life monitor. And now? Im 4000kms (second change) in and I haven't burned a drop. *fingers crossed* I was going to post this but I read this and thought I'd let you know.

Went from Castrol Dino oil to: Mobil 1 full syn ALWAYS 5W-30

Go to the synthetic. Mobil 1 has been great over the years for me.

It's weird, my truck burns valvoline synthetic, but I put mobil in it and it doesn't burn oil anymore. Hmmmm, wonder what's going on there.

Really?? Well I burned under a half quart with my first change to mobil 1, just like with conventional.

But in the second change nothing has burned at all just over 4000kms I checked it today! Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30

That's only like 2300 miles, eh? Every time my oil needs changing, it starts getting burnt and sometimes the oil level light may come on.

Yes but normally by now I'd be over half-way into a quart of oil. Which I had to start carrying in the truck around the 60,000km mark. I haven't even cracked a bottle this time yet. *fingers crossed*

Before I believe it starting disappearing 2000kms in.

I bought my 08 in Feb with 94K. It was a fleet truck that saw only highway miles escorting oversize loads. Service records indicate dino oil changes every 3K. I switched to Amsoil and am just now getting ready for my first oil change. No leaks detected. I always do 2 10K oil changes when switching from dino to Amsoil, then it's 25K all the way. Never had a problem with leaks after switching.
