I have a 2003 Z71 Silverado with a 4L60e (M30) transmission. The truck has 115,000 miles. Mostly highway with no towing. Tranny was serviced (flushed) at 30K and at 80K. Fluid level is good and color is normal.

The issue is it shifts in and out of overdrive repeatedly if I climb a hill or put load on it. It only does this at a narrow speed range at roughly 45-50mph at 1200-1300rpm. If I am driving faster (on the highway for example) and I hit a hill it doesn't do it. All other shifting occurs normally during acceleration and deceleration. I am the original owner and I have never had any problems until now.

 

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

you have an issue with your TCC lockup ... take it to a transmission mechanic and have it checked for codes ... a code may or may not show up, dependin on what is going on ... could be your line pressure.... could be a TCC solenoid blockage/failure (easy fix) ... or a TCC clutch wearing (requires R&R for the fix)

 

while it is slipping and shifting like that there is a lot of heat generated in the transmission.... and excess heat is bad

My last truck was a 99 1/2 ton 4.8L with the 4L60E, I had the same problem. No trouble codes were set, so I took the dealers tranny guy for test drive, he brought along his tech 2 scan tool. As we were driving I told him what exactly happened and when. He picked it up on his scan tool right when I said it was going to pop out fo OD.

The problem was two fold, part of the problem was the tcc solonoid, the other half of the problem was the port on the valve body where the tcc solonoid seals off. See, the tcc solonoid is sort of a proportioning valve, it has a steel ball that opens and closes and that steel ball seals off on port in the aluminum valve body. See where I'm going here, , steel vs. aluminum? Any way, the steel ball starts to peen away the surface of the aluminum valve body, when the fluid gets warm (that's when mine did it) the fluid thins out some and leaks past this "improper" sealing surface and it messes with the line pressure.

The fix - the dealer pulled the vlave body and took it to a machine shop where they reamed out that port, installed a steel insert, so now the steel ball in the tcc solonoid can seal off on steel surface. $450.00 problem solved.

That is a very common issue with the 4L60s. Back in day the TCC regulator valve (reg valve) used to be a 2 piece design but was updated because of the reg valve wearing out the bore of the VB (valve body). Unfortunatley, the bean counters did not change the material of the reg valve so it still would wear out the bore in the VB but usually this occurs after the warranty is up on the vehicle so GM doesnt have to pay for it. The last post was absolutely correct - reg valve is steel and VB is aluminum so you know which one is going to win...

My "04 just started doing that as well(167000 miles). Between 40 -50mph at light throttle it surges 100-200 RPM. I didn't think the lockup was hunting. I was told it could be the throttle position sensor is worn on the throttle body(drive by wire). If it is the worn valve body issue, does anybody know if there is any other fix for this issue. ie full replacement of the valve body? BTW, I don't have any codes according to my SnapOn scanner....

Bringing this post back from the dead! Can someone tell me if the TCC solenoid can be replaced without removing the valve body? (03' 2500HD 4x4) Thanks for the help.

Ur tcc or the wires leading there are probably ur prob that or your break switch is rattling  around Or something but if you have a brake switch issue this will turn off the cruise control

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
