What Is With The Silverado's Front Bumper?

I have wondered why some Silverado's have a slit in the front bumper and some do not.

I looked at different years and some have them and some don't in the same year.

Is there any rhyme or reason to this?

I found on the 2011 HD's they are bigger for the oil cooler but that is all I came up with.

Any ideas?

2007-2008 only had them for the models which carried HD cooling. 2009+ all have them.

Actually for '07-'08 on the 1/2-tons only those with the "NHT" Max-Trailering package had the slot,starting in '09 all 1/2-tons have it.

The HD's have always had the slot regardless of year/options.
