Gmt-900 Door Speakers (pictures)

In my GMC my passenger door speaker went dead (I know for sure I tested it.), piece of junk OEM anyways, I want to upgrade to something not from GM, because I'm sure its like 500$ for one door speaker. (hell they wanted to charge 8$ for a small metal clip on the door panel, luckily I got him down to 5.90$ :D )

Any advice on this piece of junk? Or....

I need some advice on the brand of speaker to go with. Seeing as how its been a few years since I've had to shop for speakers. Advice welcome.

I'm guessing cut the plug off for the new speakers when the come.

And I probably have to drill HOLES :seeya:

It says 4 ohms on the back if that matters.

The speaker measures 5 1/4"

The shell its in (into the door trim outside door itself) measures just a hair under 6 1/4"

The hole it all sits in (the door hole) is about 5 5/8".

Here are pics:

It looks like you could probably install a 6 1/2" speaker from the sounds of your measurements, and from what I saw on Crutchfield.

I would get a set of comonent speakers, and replace the tweeters also. Most of the aftermarket speakers are 4ohm, even component sets. You may want to add a small amp also. Doesn't mean you will be playing your stereo louder, it will just "give more/cleaner power to the speakers" when you do turn it up some so to speak.

As far as brands, well...... it has been a long time since I worked at a specialty car audio store, and I am sure some has changed.

I would look into the following brands, in no paticular order: JL Audio, Boston Acoustics, MB Quart, maybe even: Infinity, Kicker, Kenwood, Polk Audio, to name a few.

I would take a couple cd's and go listen to as many different sets as you can within your budget, and decide from there.

Good luck!

I could give you a few suggestions on products but Ill give you some advice on buying instead.

Go to a store and take some of your music with you to demo with.

Louder usually seems better so salesmen will just crank it up to distortion. Listen quieter to hear quality.

Don't listen to them with an amplifier on, have them run the speakers direct from the source.

Set the tone controls to what you like not what they want.

Only have the speakers you want to listen to turned on.

Buy anything from Maxxsonics they are good and I like the guys that design it! :D

Ok my problem with this is that plastic case the speaker is in, you can't remove the speaker from it, so if I buy an aftermarket speaker, screw it to the door there will be a gap from the door to the trim, you can see in the pic that it's like a inch or so that plastic sits right in the trim. (that speaker doesn't recess into the door it recesses into the trim!!)

Is that a big deal? Do you guys see what I'm dealing with? Or should I just bolt the thing on and who cares if theres a gap between speaker and door trim?

If you go with crutchfield they will include the adapter for the door to mount the new speakers and also include the wiring harness for free!!!

Cool thanks! Have you done this before with your truck?

still rocking factory speakers on a 6 year old truck with no problems  turn your gangster beats down and your speakers might still be going :D

You are absolutley 100% right there. :D I tend to have it maxed out when I'm by myself, but I keep the bass at -1 and the treble at 5 so they don't die too fast!

Update:

I bought some 6 1/2" 2-way Alpines S-type from Visions, but the adapter plate required holes for a secure install (the guy the store made me believe otherwise.)

So I returned them because I "found" another factory speaker from a secret location....

BTW having a wiring schematic of the truck helps huge if you were to run new speakers (which I thankfully have) (figuring out positive negatives) seeing as how they are ALL different colors.

Anyways

Next time they go, I'll drill holes, but not before 100,000kms!

I replaced all of my speakers in my 07 with some Infinity Reference 6022SI's and they fit and sound great. I bought mine through crutchfield and they came with the mounts to make the speakers mount up to the stock door holes and I believe they came with an adapter so you don't even have to cut off the factory plug. I love these speakers and would definitely recommend them!

Infinity's are the way to go. That's what I ran on my last truck (all the way around) and they sounded great! Just make sure to keep your tweeters.

Did you have to drill holes? For the door that is.

I have Alpine Type S 6 1/2", 4x6's, and two 12" woofers in my truck. Best sounding system I have ever had in a vehicle. You should of stuck with the Alpines.

Didn't wanna drill the holes in the door yet, I had the 6 1/2 two-ways. The guy at the store said if I put those in I'd wanna do the rears after lol.

    • The LCA bolts are NOT a one time use fastener.  GM does not have them called out as such at all.   They are torque plus degree, but not a one time use TTY.  Nowhere in the service manual does it call out for replacing the LCA bolts for being one time use.  Think about it.  The LCA bolts are now the alignment adjustment point, instead of the UCA bolts like the prior generation.    A bolt that is meant to be adjusted for alignment...would it make sense to make it a one time use component?  How would you get an alignment done in the first place?  You couldn't.       Also.  What TSB exactly?  There is no TSB that I see for 2019-2026 for over-torquing LCA bolts.  There was a PI, PIT5533C, but that covered 2014-2018 body trucks for re-torquing LCA mounting bolts.  But those trucks to a 2019-2026?  Not the same, so PIT5533C does not apply.
    • Nice looking setup!  Is this the kit you got?  If so 211 is a great deal!  https://accessories.chevrolet.com/product/trailering-camera-system-86584184   My TT came with a wireless rear camera but it only works on an app or a separate screen they sell so I've decide it's not worth the hassle since it keeps disconnecting and with wireless android auto it's a hassle trying to connect my phone to it.  So I've been thinking about adding the GM camera so it's integrated into the rest of the camera views.   I also found this one which seems to be a different PN & retail price that explicitly states the invisible trailer view https://www.shopchevyparts.com/chevrolet/2024/silverado-2500-hd/electronics/85825715-silverado-2500-trailer-camera-transparent-view-requires-trg-camera-provisions-p-92326971.html?sort=2a
    • You didn't say what year it is. I have a '17 5.3 6l80e & used the Range AFM delete for a while to stay in V8 mode. Then I got a local tuner to preform a HPTune on my 6l80e & love it. He did a AFM delete, torque matching between engine & transmission, removed converter slip and mild engine tune that helps the transmission. Gears shift better, at specific speeds, no hunting for gear, no 2 gear down shifts, no spark plug miss feel. Drives like a different truck. I highly recommend it.
    • I know this old thread but I just replaced the left side engine mount on my 2018 5.3 2wd and it was a pain. A quick search showed that it was probably going to cost around $600 to $900 to get it replaced. I researched how to replace it and decided to do it myself being that I'm retired and have the time and tools. What should have taken a day took me 4 days plus a couple trips to my chiropractor and some blood. Why a mount failed at 150k miles is beyond me but such is life.   Peace
