So i started looking around for small pickups, and the best one imo is the 01-04 body style tacoma... but wow, they are freaking expensive.. - i dont like the nbs tacomas, they look cheap.

im looking at 03 double cab, 4wd, trd package and its nearly $20k, it has very low miles (50k).. everything is stock so its a +++ factor.

but i think they were like 25-27k new... if only my truck depreciated the way this thing does..

any comments, opinions on the 01-04 tacoma's.

They are expensive because there arent that many of them.

Although they were the best selling small truck for those years because of the rust issues a large number of them were taken off the used market.

i recently sold my 03 toyota tacoma for $10,000, it had 250,000km(which is alot where im from because the roads are horrible), plus it failed inspection and needs about $2000 work done to it. sold it in 2 hours haa! :uhoh:

Tacomas and Jeeps seem to hold their value very well. The tacoma will run forever, have a friend that has one with 350k miles and running on 3 cylinders, but it still runs lol. I'd watch for frame rot, as my shop teacher when i was in school has a 2005 tacoma with some major frame rot. Had he truck on the lift and we found 4-5 spots where the frame was completely rotten through, one hole being 3-4" big. Supposedly some of the frames recalled were used on 2005s.

there was a recall on alot of the 03 tacomas as well, the chassis use to rust out on them. Mine was looked at but there wasnt enough damage so they just put a under-coating on it to protect it from rott

Yep, the recall was for 95.5-04 tacomas i believe. I guess depending on location would dictate on how bad the chassis is. Surface rust isnt too bad, some undercoating will fix that. But when you tap on the frame with a hammer and the hammer goes through the frame, you have problems lol. Just going over the whole frame on my teacher's 05 tacoma, found some holes, 1 being 3-4" big! They at first wanted to just swap the frame out on his truck, but he demanded a trade in, and got the 1 1/2x book value.

I had one. Very nice truck if a relatively small truck is what you need. I put a small coilover lift on mine (Bilstein) and 32s. Looked nice, drove nice, very dependable, not as good gas mileage as you might think (on the 3.4 V6, I average 17.8 in mixed driving).

    • 2020 2500 HD...I had some trouble getting the key into the ignition switch but went in fine after applying some extra effort. Since then, the door chimes when open when the key is out of the ignition. Also, when I lock the doors with the switch on the arm rest, the driver door locks but then unlocks. (I can lock everything fine with the fob) The message on the little screen displays the "Engine Hours"...kinda weird.   I'm guessing something happened to the ignition switch and it thinks the key is still in there. I unplugged the batteries for 20 minutes, no change. There are a number of videos on YouTube but nothing I can find that address this specific issue. Ideas appreciated, thank you.

    • Looking for help troubleshooting a metallic like front end rattle. Figured I’d see if anyone had thoughts before I schedule an appointment with the dealer.   The rattle is fairly loud and occurs primarily when the front driver side wheel hits a bump, even fairly minor road seams. Sometimes does it when the passenger hits a bump but I don’t believe when the rear hits. Rattle still occurs when foot is pressing brake peddle so I think that rules out the caliper rattle I’ve read about. I’ve also checked the running boards and they are tight.   Most noticeable at slow speeds.    Any insight is appreciated.
    • We try to make cruise the coast. It’s where our favorite casino is. I only want to spectate. Never took a car. Always had one to take. I belonged to a club once. Even when I used to drag raced. It was during test and tune. Probably because I’m not a night owl, party person.
    • We had a pretty big cars and coffee in Indy this past weekend.  Pretty much anything and everything was there.
