97 Yukon Fuel Pump

I have recently purchased a 97 Yukon and the other night I ran out of gas (yea I know, but the gauge was just a little past 1/4 tank). After getting it home I put about 8 gallons of gas in it and still wouldn't crank. After surfing the web I read that the fuel filter would also need to be changed, so yesterday after work I changed the fuel filter, now my dilema. After cycling the switch 3 to 4 times to prime the system the truck will crank but will only run for 5-10 seconds and then die (no gas). I cycle the system and again it will run but for only a few seconds. So what could be the problem? If the fuel pump on the verge of going bad or is there something else?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Sounds like the fuel pump. You probably didn't run out of fuel, your pump died
