Replacing Brake Lines - Can I Bypass Abs Module

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

99 GMC Serria Z71 46,000kms

I have have a brake line leak on one of the cluster of 4 lines that run to the Abs module.

Nasty rust problems since the first year ... only on the frame. Engine and transmission like new an it's still a nice ride.

Took it to the Dealer ... they say Brake lines are all bad and need replacing and that they had to also replace Rotors, calipers, Pad and Brake Hoses ...And this is just a start ... they said they could not communicate with the ABS module and this may be an electrical problem and the ABS unit may need replacement ... which would mean big dollars!

Dealer wanted at least $3500. They said we should scrap the truck and offered $1000 for it.

They said they would try to repair if we wanted ... but it was not worth doing.

The ABS fuse has been pulled from this truck for 7 years because of problems the dealer would not fix back in 2003 (past the 3 year warrenty). At the time (2003) they wanted to replace the calipers/rotors/pads and fix ABS for $2500. We got a local guy to replace

rotors and pads for about $600 and pulled the ABS fuse. Ran fine until the brake line broke.

I think the problem with the ABS system in 2003 was the wheel sensors and

possibly the ABS module or both. Funny that they came out with a recall on the sensors a year or so later. I doubt the ABS system can be put back in service without spending a lot

of money. BTW the recall is still open on the Truck ... maybe the dealer wanted to make

extra money by replacing parts since they would be replacing the wheel sensors???

The truck is mainly used up at the cottage and rairly goes on the main highways. I would like to keep it on the road.

The ABS has not worked for 7 years. Can't I just replace the brake lines from the

master cylinder out to the front and back brakes and remove the connections

to the ABS module?

At the same time I would replace the Hydraulic Hoses and check out and replace calipers & rotors if required. I would get the No Rust Cunifer brake tubing for the brake lines ... but would still oil spary the frame when fixed.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

I have the same problem with my '94. Planning to change Master Cyl. and bypass ABS for starters. See comments in How To Section under '94 Suburban Brakes...

had the same problem on my 2001 Z71, all lines needed replaced due to rust

replaced all the lines through the ABS pump - works fine, my ABS pump burned up long ago, i just used needle nose pliers to snap the LED in the cluster display and left the pump unplugged, my buddy is still driving it as i got a new 2010 a couple weeks ago

hth - good luck
