First Oil Change Today

Recommended Posts

My truck had its first oil change today. The odometer was at 6200kms and the oil dealie was still at 51%. This was my second attempt to have the oil changed on my lunch break. The first attempt went like this....I'm sorry sir, but the technicians are on their lunch break. WTF!!! So today I went back to find the lights were out, there was a storm in the area and the power was out. So I (reluctantly) went to Mr. Lube. I used Castrol full synthetic with a GM filter and it came out to $101. The lube guys also said the rear diff oil should be changed at the first oil change due to the fact that new vehicles have mineral oil in the rear diff. What was more alarming was the lube guy said my front diff oil was white and was contaminated with water! I have never had this truck in any water and cannot believe this could happen. Has anyone else experienced white oil in the front diff on a new truck? I will be going to the dealer tomorrow to have the diff oil changed and explain to me how this could happen (to the front diff).

Sounds like an upsell?

You should change your rear diff after about 500 miles of towing I believe the manual says. It doesnt have "mineral oil" in it. It has what is called out 80w-90 I believe.

I really believe that there is paint or something that makes the lube come out this color. I did however change all my diff fluids over at around 7000 miles including transfer case (since I was already down there). I can't believe that an oil change with filter cost you over 100 bucks though. That is a ripoff. I mean, I feel like I waste money but still only pay about 40 bucks for the supplies for a full synthetic with a top notch filter.

Rear diff has synthetic 75W-90 gear lube from the factory.

Correct, front axle is 80w-90 or 75w-90 in colder climates

$100 was a ripoff. My intention was to have it done at the dealer for the first time, but after striking out twice I said screw it and went to the other guys. I won't go there anymore and usually don't, but I wanted the first one done in a shop so there was records. Next oil change will be in my garage and the money saved will have me posting on the "what are you drinking" page!!

My owners manual on my '04 says dont have to change the diff fluid till 100,000 miles. I had my truck at the dealer about a week ago at 65,000 miles to have the trans fluid and transfer case done and I asked if I should do the differientials and he said no. Comes with synthetic and good for 100,000 miles.

$100 bucks for an oil change!!! I come out around $35.00 getting Mobil 1 and an AC delco duraguard filter at walmart and doing it myself  Super great saving and you know it's done right.

I just checked my manual and it says the rear diff has synthetic so it can stay for awhile. The front diff is just regular 80w-90 and it looks like crap so it will be changed with synthetic. I will be doing the the oil changes from now on in my garage. Thanks for the reply.
