what do you think, does it look ricey?

hashmarks.jpg

I saw this done on a red gp and w/ white hashmarks.  I thought it looked cool, sets it off a bit.  I was trying to not mod the car because I don't have any money, but I got bit by the mod bug last night and I've gotta do something.  So, I thought a good place to start would be some relatively inexpensive exterior mods.  I removed the GTP emblems last night and tonight I'll get the Grand Prix badge off of the trunk lid.  Now, my plan is to add gold hash marks, and possible remove the pin striping (taken off in photochopped pic) and the Grand Prix decal from the door and add a custom Grand Prix GTP logo of my design.

What do you think?  I hope the vinyl doesn't push me into the rice category.  I want to make the car look different than stock (and make it easier to find in a parking lot) w/o going overboard and making it look like cr@p.

Hey Jon,

I don't think you could do anythin to make that car ricey.

After all its all American Metal. Hooha! :nono:

trust me, it can be done.  I've seen it done.  From what I've seen you can make anything you want rice, even if it's powered by a 350 and is rwd, Like the new Camaro Type R I saw :uhoh:

I do not think it looks ricey.  Do you know the origin of the 2 hash marks on the front fender???  I'll give you a hint...the Corvette Gran Sport had them... :thumb:  :nono:

True, the very nice 96 Grand Sports had the red hash marks. I know the hash marks go back at least as far as the 1953 Motorama Corvette showcar   :D

Sweet, glad you guys like them.  I think they look good and the gold is subtle enough that it doesn't jump out at you.  I'm going to get in touch w/ Brent at Decalking.com and get some gold vinyl.  Now to work on my custom Grand Prix logos for the sides.

I'm putting these on the girlfriends 2002 Saturn SC2 as well.  I'll get some pics of the cars lined up when I get this all done (I'm thinking two weeks at least before I'll be able to do this)

I say go for it, I loved it on the vette's, I would put them on my wifes car, but she don't let me touch it. I too am in the process of custom decals for my Z71, I am removing all the badges as we speak. 1500 on the doors, the tailgate emblems and especially the ugly LS ones on the back suicide doors. I have a design started that has a bowtie with a checkered flag look. I can't wait to get it finished. It will cost no more than $10

I agree with Tom.  I would not put those hash marks on any vehicle either.  What I would do though....Debadge the car, tint the windows dark black and give it a nice polish.  I'd go for the clean look with that car.  Just because the 'vette had them years ago, does not mean its not ricey to put them on a late model grand prix. (IMO)  Save your $$$ and get some tint for those windows...

Here's an old photochop I did w/ some window tint on the car.  It'll definetly be one of my next mods.  I just want to get a price quote from the local tint shop and probably get this done within a month.

I'm gonna try out the hash marks and see how I like them.  I mean, it's probably about 10 bucks for the vinyl at most and if I don't like them I can just peel them off.  IMO, they are subtle enough and the gold is a dark enough color that they won't stand out tremendously.  Going w/ a bright red or white wouldn't look good, but I think the gold compliments the car nicely.

I'll post some pics when I do it and I guess, we'll see how it looks then.

Ahhhhhh...that looks much better.   :uhoh:

I dont think the hash marks are going to look bad, but dont let the vinyl get out of hand...if you know what I mean.   :nono:

anyways...get that tint on and lower that thing...keep it clean and low.   :thumb:

no worries there.  I'm only going to put on some hashmarks and either leave the Grand Prix logo's on or make some custom ones.  But, the vinyl stops there.  I can't wait to get the windows tinted because it'll look 100% nicer.  I'd lower it an inch or two, but I'm worried about clearance, it'll scrape going down my driveway if I don't back out, so I don't want to muss up my front end.

Next I can bring on some performance mods :uhoh:

I don't think it looks all that ricey.  Yet I like cars being very plain.  I'm not to hip on stickers n such, I hate having to have a school parking lot sticker.  Tint would make a huge difference, for a cheaper mod.  Other than trying to keep dust off Black I'd say your car looks as good as ever!  Good enough to give to me if you so choose.    :thumb:

    • have you stuck with dealer oil changes since then? I made the same switch after getting tired of crawling around under the truck, but I’ve found some dealers are way better than others about getting you in quickly. Curious if yours has been good about scheduling or if you’ve had to look elsewhere for quicker turnaround.
    • Thank you.   I am set on a 3.0 Duramax as my previous truck with a Ford Ecoboost had just as many, if not more, "common" issues.  Cam phasers, timing chain issues, 10-speed valve body and CDF drum, emissions issues, etc.  So I figured, why not get 2x the fuel mileage (these things got 27+mpg on every mixed city/highway test drive I put them through) and better towing capability with resale value to boot?   My minimum, shortest trip will be 50 miles 1-way and I regularly go out of state with a travel trailer.  I'm planning on using this for a marketing/event promotion business also, which would require regular towing of trailers for bands, DJs, sound and lighting gear, along with my personal camera gear for filming events.   Looked at other trucks in the $30k+ price range but the issues seem to be everywhere, plus too many with gaudy mods.  I'm literally sticking with RWD trucks because they tend to be actually used as trucks, vs. the 4x4 models I've seen with unsafe lifts, huge tires, and general mods that would affect reliability (I'm wondering if some of them were tuned, hence the aggressive throttle response and hard shifting).   So my goal is to find a stock, 3.0 with 1 or 2 owners, in good physical condition, and decently well maintained.  Can't seem to find that up here, everything in the $27-30k range has had multiple owners, smoke smell, issues, or body damage.  Or the ridiculously modified trucks with 80k miles for under $27k but lots of problems...
    • That’s pretty tough Grumpy. I reread the previous few posts. They all reference oil changes. Much like your last thread. In my humble opinion it keeps things interesting.
    • Engine Wear and ISO 4406   1.) Cold Starts. 2.) High Particle Count. 3.) Low operating temperature viscosity and high low temperature cranking viscosity. 4.) Depleted AW, Friction and Acid packages.  5.) High engine load.    https://me.caltexlubricants.com/en_me/home/learning/from-chevron/heavy-duty-diesel-vehicles-and-equipment/The-Importance-of-Clean-Engine-Oil-and-Its-Impact-on-Equipment-and-Business-Performance.html   High particle counts have five sources. 1.) They are manufactured within the engine. Both wear debris and amalgamation of degradation products and combustion driven soot (worse in GDI). 2.) They are ingested via intake air. Ever hear the best oil filter is a good air filter? 3.) They are entrained in the fuel. 4.) This one is insidious. They are introduced in 'fresh oil'. 5.) They are introduced during the oil change.   ISO 4406 is the test that measures and quantifies the combine effects of all of the above particle related issues. You can mitigate your way into multiples of engine life by being attentive to them all.    https://www.hyprofiltration.com/blog/is-new-oil-clean   (from the link above)    [Quote] What Is the Recommended ISO 4406 Cleanliness Code for New Oil?   A good upper limit for new oil cleanliness is 16/14/11 (ISO 4406). Typical new oil usually has ISO codes of 19/17/15 or worse, which is far too dirty for sensitive components. This can be a major cause of degradation and premature failure.
