Check your spare tire hoist mechanisms!

 

Before you find out in an emergency situation, check that your spare tire hoist mechanism has not failed. After a small amount of drama, I attempted to lower my spare tire and when it would not, I searched some threads here on GM-Trucks and was pointed to a procedure in my manual for resetting my Secondary Latch Mechanism (5-100ish). This procedure is to be followed when the cable drops all the way, but your spare only drops a couple inches and stops. This means that your secondary latch has engaged. The secondary latch prevents your spare from falling off your truck should the cable mechanism fail.

 

After following this procedure several times, I still could not get my spare to release.

 

After a bit of drama at the dealership, they finally replaced the entire hoist mechanism after physically cutting off the old hoist. The new part does not have a secondary latch. The technician explained that this part is subject to corrosion and fails quiet frequently. He recommended lubricating the cable and secondary latch with marine grade (will not absorb water) wheel bearing grease.

In 7 years I had to replace the winch twice in my '04. I'm hoping the GMT900 winch is more reliable.

Just went through trying to drop the spare tire on my truck a couple weeks ago, and dropping my friend's spare 2-3 days ago. Mine was pretty well frozen up, took about 45 mins to an hour of spraying with PB, lowering, raising, kicking, beating the latch with a hammer, and repeating till it finally dropped from the secondary mechanism. Friend's spare took about 15-20 mins of the same thing, both of our trucks being 05 1500s with under 75k miles (mine is at 74k, his is at 66k) Definitely a bad design, after everything is well lubed, works good now though. Will have to get some of that marine grade grease and do that. Thanks for the heads up.

Would a new redesigned hoist (without the secondary latch) fit a GMT800 truck?

Note that my truck is a 900.

Looks like the same part, my dad's 2002 2500 looks about the same.

whats the new part number , been riding around with the spare in the bed for years, also the large suvs use the same part with the secondary latch, still and have the old part number.
