Towing Advice Please

Hello,

 

Looking for a little advice. I have an 18 foot open dovetail car trailer that I have only ever used for hauling construction materials when needed. I weighs 1800 lbs. I need to pick up and haul a 67 camaro on it this weekend weight is 3500 lbs. Total distance I need to travel is 200 miles with the car on the hauler.

 

I know both of my vehicles are rated to pull it but wanted some candid opinions of what would be in my best interest to pull it with.

2000 stock gmc sierra ext short box with tow haul

or

1998 Chev Tahoe 2 door 4x4 with trans cooler.

 

I have just never had to really haul much weight with either. The Tahoe is rated for an extra 100-200 lbs but I wonder if it will sway too much because of the short wheel base and then I wonder if the tongue weight with the car on it will squat the rear springs down too much on the sierra.

 

Could me just me being overly concerned about either one but just trying to air on the side of caution. Tires are rated for the tow on both vehicles and both are mechanically sound. Just looking for some thoughts from anyone that possibly pulls car haulers or boats with similar weight on vehicles similar to mine. Trailer has electric brakes but the trucks do not, never needed them. Should I bother installing electric brakes in the truck we decide on or not bother just for this one haul...

Which ever has the longest wheel base. I'd suspect the 2000 pickup does. With that said, use some sort of friction sway controller and pull the car onto the trailer, not backed on. This will help with weight distribution. The 350 in the tahoe most likely has a little better torque at a lower RPM, but the Truck would be more stable I'd think from my experience.

Oh right should have stated the camaro runs and will be driven onto the trailer nose forward.

Either one will do fine in my opinion.

However, I feel you need to re-think about NOT having a brake controller. You're talking over 5000lbs behind the truck.....recipe for bad things.

It may only be for one haul, but it only takes 1 person to pull in front of you to make you wish you did have the brake controller.

I just found the MTO law is i need aux brakes over 3000 lbs so not a problem. Prefer that anyways.

 

I wanted to use the sierra to begin with but was second guessing my trucks ability to handle this haul.

 

I did not want to find myself doing a lastminute aux brake swap in my trucks if the sierra was too light duty.

 

Seems as though the consensus so far that the sierra is fine to deal with it.

Sierra will do fine. It's not like your looking at alot of weight. What gears does the truck have? Pa has the same law, anything over 3000 lbs requires trailer brakes.
