Aloha Folks,

Very first post. I live in Hawaii on the Big Island near Hilo. My neighbor has given me her father's old Silverado so I'm new to GM since the last one I owned was a 50 2-door Coupe back in 62.

The truck is a solid California transplant about 8 years ago. Has a 350 and a 400 trans. The transmission leaks a whole bunch and I need to do something about that. Any ideas where to start. I got a filter kit so will be doing that very shortly.

kind regards,

John L

Thanks for that info. I was hoping in wouldn't be that complicated but that's what I was thinking too. I'll need step by step instruction since I don't have a manual that covers the Turbo 400. My Chilton's might talk about transmission removal and I'll consult that.

regards, John

Welcome...

I would start by dropping the trans, and replacing the front and rear seals, as well as the pan gasket.

Thanks for the welcome. I think it pays to be a good neighbor and they are too so I feel very lucky. The odometer shows a bit over 54K and I don't think its been around once.

kind regards, John

That's the same model I have. It turns out that the transmission is a HD350 instead of the 400. I thought it was a 400 because of the M40 on the sticker in the glove box.

I crawled underneath yesterday and its leaking through the hole forward of the pan. Must be right below the torque converter. Yes, I guess I'll be dropping the transmission. Darn.

Well, I've found out that it is a HD350 transmission instead of a 400 after crawling around under the truck for a bit.

If its right below the torque converter I would say its coming out of a hole in the inpsection cover. The actual transmission fluid leak is probably originating from the front seal, or there is a crack in the pump housing.

Is the pump housing inside the transmission? I'm certain that would be harder to repair than replacing the seal.
