Rear Differential Size

After looking through here and seeing some of the frustrations with no drain plug on the rear diff cover...i am most likely going to put a aftermarket rear diff cover with a plug, or possibly a skid plate on it. However.....does anyone know off the top of their head the size of the rear differential on a 2007 GMC Sierra z71-NBS?

I know it's 10 bolt, and I believe it's 8.5 inches, possibly 8.6, does this sound right to anyone?

Thanks!

Yep,All 1/2-tons with the 4.8 or 5.3 have the 8.625" rear-end,6.0 and 6.2's have the 9.5" rear-end.

Thank you very much sir...off to spending more money I go :)

Well, i was looking at a heavier duty nodular iron cover...but really....i would think with more steel on there it would shorten the life of the oil because the steel is more than likely going to insulate more heat into the rear diff, I am looking at a Mag-Hytec cover, but i also noticed that summit racing has their own house brand polished aluminum rear diff covers. The Mag-Hytec's are a bit pricey, but all of them come with drain plugs. I mean don't get me wrong, i want something that is going to not leak and do it's job, but also---i don't want the oil cooled so much that it's goopy (which it is in the mornings around here anyways, but thats besides the point. But i'm open to suggestions....

I have heard good things about the Mag Hytec covers.

The Mag-hytec holds more gear oil. It has a drain plug and a fill plug with a dip stick. The dip stick has a magnet on it. It does not use a gasket. It has a grove in the mating surface and uses an O-ring for sealing. Mine hasn't leaked in over 4 years.

More oil is always good. The underside of your truck looks a little familar (Bilstein HD shocks...hellwig swaybar :)) I'm seriously looking into the Mag-hyteks...just not sure if i'm totally keen of the polished aluminum on black though (yes i'm a picky SOB...and the first to admit it)

Though honestly...using an O-ring instead of a gasket is defintely a good thing, so i may have to bite the bullet here and just say the hell with it and get the mag-hytec....any other suggestions for covers?....I was looking at a TA Performance heavier covers, but i'm not sure they are really going to do the trick...decscions decscions....!

Well, said screw it and bought the mag-hytec.....seems to make the most sense, and wasn't completely aware how much chrome traps in heat, so sometime next week....front and rear diff fluid changes and transfer case :)...there goes about 4 bills...

Right from Mag-Hytec....prices are about the same within $10 of one another on most places so i said screw it and just ordered it from the manufacturer

Sorry, but I am confused. I know this is an older post, but I had a TA Performance cover on my '04 Yukon. I remember it was a 10-bolt model. I read somewhere that the new generation trucks, like my '09 1500, have a 14-bolt semi-floating rear axle, and the 2500 series has the full-floating 14-bolt identified by a removeable section at the front around the pinion.

The number of "bolts" is supposed to be the number of bolts holding the ring gear and may not actually match the number of bolts around the cover right? So what do I actually have?

Plus, on all the websites, it looks like the covers for the 8.6 and 8.5 inch ten-bolt rearends are the same. Is this the one I want?

I just want to be sure before I order a cover for my truck. Thanks in advance!
