Abs Come On At Slow Speeds?

Ok I'm having a issue with the brakes on my 2000 GMC Sierra 1500, the abs keeps kicking on at slow stops as if I was sliding , on a flat straight road even into a parking spot . If i use them harder to come to a stop then it does not do it only slow as in 15 mph and below . Brakes are maybe a year old front and rear... rotors, pads, fluid both calipers in rear . No abs light on dash , no codes for abs either . I dont want to just yank the abs and send it off to be fixed to absfixer if its not that so what else could be causing this ?

 

As of now i pulled the fuse for abs but the snow is coming so I want to get this fixed ASAP . I live on a big hill and that abs has save my butt every winter since she was new coming down that hill in the snow and ice .

It's one of the two front wheel speed sensors, they were a big problem back then. You have to take them out and sand the sureface down and clean the sensor up good and it should work right then.

How? its all part of bearing assembly , I did the pass side a few years back and it all came as one . Is there a way to take it apart ?

Ironically, I just jumped on the forums after a long hiatus to research this exact same issue with my 2006 silverado.

After much research I found TSB #030525007 which tells of this exact issue. I haven't had mine apart yet to find out, but I have heard

of many people breaking the sensor trying to get them out. Is there a trick to this? Pics would be awesome too if anyone has them!

If you grab the sensor squarely, with a pair of channel locks, then twist back and forth while pulling straight up, they will come out ok. I've done literally hundreds of these repairs and only ever broken two. Both of those sensors were siezed tight in the hub bearings so they were going to break, no matter what I did.

Thanks ChevyTech for the tip! Do you usually find that cleaning the corrosion/rust off fixes this problem, or do you usually have to replace the sensor?

I had the same problem for a year, i just had the fused pulled out but i did not like having the ABS disabled. So i went and got a new sensor at napa for about $60...put it in one side, put the truck back together and still had the problem. Then i took the other side out, put the original one i removed in the other side, and bingo! Feels soo good to not have my ABS lights on anymore :lol:

The rust build-up can bend the sensor. When you remove it, make sure the mounting tab isn't bent. If it is, you need a new sensor. Otherwise clean, protect and go. :uhoh:

 

Also, for those of you that have replaced a hub bearing on just one side with an aftermarket bearing, that will

do the same thing as the rust build up will. The air gap between the sensor and internal tone ring in the bearing

will be different side for side causing the ebcm to think that the front wheels are rotating at different speeds.

Timken hub bearings are available aftermarket and are the same bearing that GM uses in factory assembly.

I changed both sensors out with parts from napa ( borg /warn. parts I believe ) this weekend and all is working again . I did pull the codes with my HPTuners software and came up both sensors as being bad but assumed it was not the issue and was abs unit but it had no codes for abs ,which is why i posted . Never new you could just get the sensors alone :lol: . I really dont know what happen here as both old sensors looked clean and there was no rust on the pickups inside either. The grease inside even looked fairly clean so I dont get what happen other then maybe the wire itself going to across the A arm had a short from going up and down for 10 years .

 

Just a side note to post above , when I replaced the passenger side wheel bearing hub about 4 years back it WAS a Timken as I always use Timken parts if there is a choice . Both sensors that came out said timken and also had the same part numbers on them so that was not the issue here but could see how it could be as you stated so I agree , and would advise anyone to change both sensors at the same time if your not going to use whats in there stock .

It's not a difference in wheel speed sensor part numbers, its a difference in sensor to tone wheel air gap tolerances.

 

Glad you got it fixed though. :lol:

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome. 
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
