Po442 / Gas Smell

I recently purchased a 2001 Silverado 5.3 with 98,000 miles. After driving it for a few weeks, I received the dreaded PO442 code, I researched this and found there is a lot of information on this forum addressing the problem. I tried the fuel cap replacement first, light came back on a few days later. The only other symptom is when I park it, particulary after fueling up, I notice a heavy odor of gas for about 2 hours coming from the driver's side of the truck. I crawled around underneath and nothing appears out of the ordinary with the exception of the hose going from the cap to the tank is a little brittle in appearance. Thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance
