The Metrodome in Minneapolis collapsed at 5:30 this moring. They had 18" of snow during the storm and the roof couldn't handle the weight. Todays game is to be played tomorrow in Detroit. I already have tickets and hotel for next weeks MNF game against the Bears so hope they can fix it quickly, otherwise out about $500.

I am not an engineer by any means but wouldn't the heat from the building just keep the roof warm enough to melt the snow as it is falling? And if the snow was coming down too fast for it to be melted by said heat then who came up with the brainy idea to build a stadium with an inflatable roof in one of the snowiest regions of the country?

Yea. Seems like kind of a strange design but has only collapse once before and only took 4 days to fix. I believe the roof is made of some kind of teflon fabric and has a pretty good slope on it so snow seems to not typically collect on the roof. They don't usually get that much snow at one time, it was said to be the worst storm down there in 20 years.

With it being inflatable I'd assume it would have 2 sides and have a pocket of air with the bottom acting as a shield. So Maybe all the heat wasn't getting all the way to the top layer?

Anybody notice the audible POOF when all the snow hit the field? I think that's the most amazing part of it. Hate to think what the outcome would've been had this happened during the game.

It would have been awesome if the snow dumped right on Bret Favres head. Let's see if he can get up from that one....

I was wondering why don't they have a heating element in the roof to melt snow when it falls. You would think they would plan for a getting a lot of snow.

The roof has 2 layers and they were blowing hot air in between to try to melt the snow but it could't keep up. Maybe this is what it takes to get the Vikes a new stadium. The Metrodome is about at the end of its usefullness.

Or at least a new roof, which is probably why they did not take drastic measures to try and melt the snow off.... Because their insurance is going to buy them a new one....
